Je suis vancouvéroise d’adoption, je vois la toile de cette ville grandir, évoluer, se
transfigurer en s’imprégnant de parfums et de couleurs, amenés pas les voyageurs
hier et d’aujourd”hui. Je suis attachée a cette ville en constante mouvance. C’ est sans
hésitation que j’ai répondu présente, lorsque Pierre Rivard m’a proposé de réfléchir
a un projet qui mettrait en lumiére la création en chanson et musique francophone
de Vancouver. Définir sa culture, c’est aussi savoir se tourner vers celle des autres.
Protéger sa tradition, c’est se renouveler, se nourrir d’influences nouvelles, c’est étre
des acteurs d’aujourd’ hui et penser a demain, pour l’équilibre de son espace de vie et de
la création contemporaine. Alors pourquoi ne pas mettre en dialogue des instruments
et des voix qui ne se connaissent pas...ou encore, créer un projet transversal, qui
pourra démontrer le dynamisme du collectif interculturel artistique francophone,
en conversation avec l’esthétique de I’Orchestre symphonique de I’Université de la
Colombie-Britannique? Vancouver est le berceau d’une création musicale unique. Ce
soir, les artistes qui monteront tour a tour sur ce plateau illustreront une nouvelle fois la
richesse de leur culture, une richesse qui tisse le canevas du patrimoine de Vancouver
depuis 125 ans. Je tiens a remercier les artistes et les musiciens pour leur confiance, et
Alain Mayrand pour son écoute et ses talents d’orchestrateur. A messieurs Richard
Kurth et Jesse Read de UBC School of Music, merci d’avoir dit: Oui!, et de s‘étre
embarqués dans cette aventure artistique. Enfin, je voudrais exprimer ma gratitude
a Pierre Rivard, directeur du Centre Culturel francophone de Vancouver, qui par sa
ténacité et sa passion contagieuse de la chanson et de la francophonie, a depuis de
nombreuses années pu offfir aux artistes d’ici et d’ailleurs, ainsi qu’a la communauté
de Vancouver, des événements exceptionnels et des spectacles comme celui que nous
vous présentons ce soir. Ha! Pour ne rien oublier, nous avons pensé capter ce moment
unique avec vos applaudissements : un disque de ce spectacle sera disponible en mars
2012.

Iam a Vancowverite by adoption. I watch the canvas of this city expand, evolve, and
transform as it soaks up the perfumes and colours of all those who have looked on it,
in the past and in the present. I love this city in constant movement. So when Pierre
Rivard asked me to think about a project that would highlight Vancouver ’ creativity in
Francophone music and song, I did not hesitate for a moment to get involved. To define
one’s culture is also to be able to turn toward the cultures of others. To protect ones
traditions is also to renew oneself, to feed on new influences, to be actors for today
and thinkers for tomorrow, to find balance in one’ living space and in contemporary
creation. So why not create a dialogue of instruments and voices that are new to each
other...or create a transversal project that is able to illustrate the dynamism of the
collective francophone intercultural artistic community, in an aesthetic exchange with
the University of British Columbia Symphony Orchestra? Vancouver is the cradle ofa
unique musical creation. Tonight, the artists who will come on stage, each in their turn,
illustrate once again the richness of their culture, a richness that has been woven into
the canvas of Vancouver § cultural heritage for 125 years. I wish to thank the artists
and musicians for their trust, and Alain Mayrand for his willingness to listen and his
talent as an orchestral conductor. To Richard Kurth and Jesse Read of the UBC School
of Music, thank you for having said “Yes” and for having launched into this artistic
adventure. Finally, Iwould like to express my gratitude to Pierre Rivard, director of the
Centre Culturel francophone de Vancouver, whose tenacity and infectious passion for
Jrancophone song and for the francophone community at large have, for many years,
provided artists both here and farther afield, as well as the Vancouver community, with
exceptional events and shows like the one we are presenting to you tonight. And so that
nothing is lost, we are recording this unique moment live, with your applause. A CD
recording of the show will be available in March 2012.
