AN2 - the Terrace Standard, Wednesday, October 21, 1998 Schools hope gov't will ease budget woes HELMUT GIESBRECHT says he has the support of education minister Paul Ramsey In a bid for an emergency top up of money for School Distyict 82. The district could lose $500,000 from the money it receives from the provincial fovernment because 124 fewer students are curolled than predicted. And that would mean hav- ing to cut services and jobs in the middle of the school year. “He’s made a commit- ment he'll go to the Trea- sury Board,’’ said Gics- brecht of Ramsey’s position. Sharon Beedle, school su- perintendent, said she was waiting for the minister’s call with anticipation. Currently the district is in a $1.1 miltion deficit posi- tion. Along with the $500,000 shartfall created from the drop in enrollment numbers, an additional $600,000 must also be cut from the budget by the end of the school year. Beedle said the $600,000 Helmut Giesbrecht deficil is a result of un- anlicipated expenses such as long term sick leaves, tui- tion requirements (the dis- trict must pay for students to attend the Kispiox band school), and a $100,000 deficit carried over from the 1997-1998 budget. The board is already look- t ing into cutting $250,000 by reducing travel budgets for senior administrators and board members and holding commiltee meetings over the telephone to further reduce travel expenses, It may also decrease the number of management meetings and hold them after school so that sub- stitute teachers won’t have to be called in. Also con- templated is eliminating the last clerical position in the Kitimat board office, There has also been a hiring a.hiting freeze on ad- ministration — only internal shifting will be allowed to fill positions. The board is also looking into a busing contract in Hazelton that could belong to the Stewart school district. **But these cuts are minor compared to what we have to cut,” Beedle said. She said the district ad- visory meeting Nov. 2, which is a public meeting, will provide recommenda- lions for the board on fur- ther budget cuts, ‘ Complaint denied - THE NATIONAL body complaints about advertising has turned down a complaint about gcvernment’s Nisga’a treaty The ads are regarded as vertising and so don’t come under the Ad- vertising Standards Canada a letter to the B.C.
