The group, comprised of seven Canadian and seven Indian stu- dents, will live and work in Ter- race until they leave for India Oc- tober 11. In pairs made up of one Cana- dian and one Indian students, the students choose a worksite to volunteer for to. get first-hand knowledge of the culture. “We use the community as a resource rather than just going to the library to find out about the culture,’ said John Frederickson, the Canadian group leader. , “*It’s all meant to give the kids a chance to see something other than what they’ve known all their lives,’ said ‘the Indian group leader, Varindar Sharma, Each pair of students lives with a host family for their three month stay, said Frederick, giving them a chance to learn about people. **Tt's an opportunity to travel ‘to another country and your own country and not be a tourist,”’ said Jennifer Langman, one of the Canadian participants from Hep- worth, Ontario who is-working at the forest service. ‘You're nol secing the country only through a camera lens.’ While the group has only been in Terrace since July 27, some of the Indian sludents have already sccn marked differences between the Canadian culture and their own. ‘*People just seem to look at the short-term here and not think so much about ihe long-term,’* said Kumara Guru, an Indian student from Karnadaka, India working at Northern Native - Broadcasting. ‘A lot of food gets wasted here maybe because it doesn’t matter in the short-term.’’ He also said he finds Canadian much more relaxed than Indians. “Everything is less formal and more casual here,” said Guru “People are much more. patient and friendly and I really like that.”’ The group leaves.
