Terrace Review — Wednesday, May 22, 1991 A9 MEET THE MISS TERRACE 1991 HOPEFULS In two months a new ambassador for the city, Miss Terrace 1991, will be chosen. Here are brief sketches of six of this year’s candidates. The Terrace Review will present further coverage of the pageant as events lead up to the crowning in July. Future issues will introduce the remaining candidates. Name: Heather Bretfeld Sponsor: Elan Travel Heather, 18 years old, 5'7" tall with blue eyes and red hair, is a Grade 12 student at. Caledonia, and she works at the Pizza Hut when she isn’t studying. She says her favourite hobbies are hiking, camping and other outdoor activities. She also plays soccer. Heather is a member of the Caledonia choir, a group that - just returned from a national ; « competition in Vancouver last weekend. She’s also a member of the school? s vocal jazz ensemble. Entering the Miss Terrace pageant, she says, will give her the opportunity to learn new things and meet new people. From her pageant experience she hopes to learn how to present herself to other people in a positive and proper way. Heather’s ultimate career ambition is to become a police officer. Name: Denise Emerson Sponsor: Terrace Kinsmen Denise, a four-year resident of Terrace, is a Grade 12 student at Caledonia and works at the Lunch Box Deli. She says she decided to become a Miss Terrace candidate because it would be a challenge to prove to herself and others that she can become a better person through the experience. She adds that Lyn Lagace, Miss Terrace 1989, played a strong role in persuading her to enter the pageant. . No matter how the pageant comes out, Denise says, it will be worthwhile for the friendships she expects to gain, the experience with public speaking, and new knowledge of Tetrace’s history she expects to acquire. If she is chosen Miss Terrace 1991, Denise hopes to become a driving force behind keeping Terrace’s well-known hospitality at an optimum level. Denise believes the real spirit of Terrace is "friendliness". Name: Tina Appler Sponsor: Skeena Mall A life-long resident of . Terrace, Tina is 18 and a Grade 12 student at Caledonia. She also works at the Rainbow Embroidery and Shirt Shop in the Skeena Mall. Tina decided on her own to enter the Miss Terrace pageant. "I submitted a resume to the Skeena Mall, and I guess they just liked me," she says. When asked what she expects to gain from her pageant i experience, Tina replied, "To stand up in front of a crowd of people and talk freely without my knees giving out." She thinks the real spirit of Terrace is the happy attitude that people in the community radiate toward visitors. The pageant will give her chance to learn more about Terrace and the people who live here, and if she is chosen Miss Terrace her ambition is to represent the city well and set a good example fc: everyone. Name: Michelle Monkman Sponsor: Sure Exposure Studios, Northwest Specialty Foods Michelle, 5°10" with light brown hair and "ocean blue" eyes, is a Grade 12 student at Caledonia. Her favourite activities are swimming, biking, modelling, an occasional walk with her ‘puppy, and spending time with her family and friends. She entered the Miss Terrace pageant because she’d like to represent Terrace as a community, meet f new and exciting people, and learn more about herself through the workshops that all pageant contestants take. From her pageant experience Michelle wants to learn how | to interact with people in a group and individually, and how to accept what she _ receives when striving for ambitious goals. Two of the career options she is currently investigating are medical stenography and modelling. Name: | Laura Flynn Sponsor: Terrace Elks Lodge #425 Laura, 17 and a Grade 12 student at Caledonia, works at the Northwest Academy of the Performing Aris. She decided to enter the pageant because she feels she owes it to the city, the Elks and her parents. Through the pageant experience Laura hopes to gain more self-confidence and improve her public speaking skills. "To me, there are no losers. just winners." she says of the contest. During the pageant ail the entrants will acquire confidence, speaking skills, tact and poise, she believes. If she is chosen as Miss Terrace 1991, Laura says she will represent Terrace to the best of her abilities and show people that it is a wonderful community. "I’d like everyone to know that Terrace is not just a city, but a city with a heart," she says. Name: Lisa Lamb Sponsor: McDonald’s Lisa, a 571" 17-year-old with brown hair and blue eyes, is in Grade 11 at Caledonia and works at the Terrace McDonald’s restaurant. Lisa decided to enter the pageant when she saw the effect that a positive role model can have on children. She enjoys working with people, especially children, and she would like to have the chance to be that positive influence in their lives. She also views the pageant as an “adventure and a chance to learn more about the community she lives in. Lisa expects to benefit from the public speaking workshops for pageant entrants. "I feel that everything that we do in the pageant and pageant workshops is new learning experience," she says. Lisa enjoys, swimming reading, writing, bicycling and working with young children.
