B10 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, July 9, 1997 Bambi nos Reais ares ie Seka edaa nas bash V anderhoof Local baseball team heads to Championships OUR BAMBINO rep squad of Terrace Minor baseball is tuming winning Zone Championships an annual event, For the second year in a row, the 10 to 12-year-old boys have taken the Championships and won a berth in the Provincials. The playdowns were held two weekends ago in Ter- race, with teams from Wanderhoof and Prince Rupert competing in the double-knockout toumey. Terrace won the opener 8- 4 over Rupert. Jordan Cow- man’s sacrifice fly at the top ‘of the fifth sent Lanny Scott scurrying across the plate for what proved to be the winning run, Vanderhoof handed Prince Rupert their second loss the next day, defeating them 10- 8, So with two teams having a perfect record, the tourney turned into a best-of-three battle. In the first match, Terrace exploded with five runs at the bottom of the first in- ning, three of which came from a bases-loaded double off the bat of Jonathon Mar- cellin. Marcellin also combined pitching efforts with Jordan Cowmaa to allow Vander- hoof only two hits on ihe way to Terrace's 8-3 win. The second game was a nail-biter from the start. Terrace got om the board first with a base hit by Mat- thew McClellen, followed by two Vanderhoof errors that gave Terrace a 2-0 lead after one. But Vanderloof roared back. A solo homerun in the second, followed by two runs on Terrace errors was all they needed to take the game 3-2, In an emotional rubber match, hitters from both teams started to come to life, but Terrace had trouble getting runners across the plate. After four innings with Vanderhoof up by four, it secmed like Terrace’s fate was sealed. But in the fifth, hits by Robbic Stach, Matthew McClellen and Jonathon Major, and speedy pinch- runners Jack Haworth and Jordan Kostelnik rattled the Vanderhoof defence. Those performances, plus three Vanderhoof — crrors helped Terrace ta five runs, tying the game going into the-sixth. Jordan Cowman then put on a pitching clinic, retiring MVanderhoof’s offence in just four batters. With Terrace up, Stach once again opened the hit- ting with a single, followed by a perfectly executed bunt by Garrett Kerr. That meant Cody Paulson’s center field single was all that was needed to score Stach and win the game. The team is currently on the road with coaches Bob Marcellin and George Lomas, playing exhibition games in Burns Lake, P.G, and Vernon, The Provincial Finals take place in Nelson _ this weekend, Look for results in an upcoming Standard. _ Scope This ‘will slart at the Cablecar Chilly new club dives in THE TERRACE Dive Club has a new name, the Chilly Dippers, and they’re starting off their summer dives with a trip down the Kitimat River. snorkel drift-dive Subdivision and finish up -with a barbeque at Radley Park.
