Provincial Highways Minister P.A.- ‘Gaglardi has reminded

Chamber of Commerce people that Highway 16 (Northern
Trans-Provincial) has: ‘come a long, lorig-way in the post 15

years,’

His reminder is contained in the
text of a letter sent:to the North-
west. B.C. Chambers of Commerce
on August 30. Giving an outline
of work completed to date on the
highway he points out, “While
work ‘has been extremely tough
and weather conditions have slow-
ed progress on some of the work
— it should. be remembered that
15 years ago there was a. total of
2 miles Of paving over the whole
452 miles between. Prince Rupert
and Prince George,” —

Mr. Gaglardi’s letter was gent
in.reply to a plea from the North.
west Chambers for concerted . at-
tention to. Highway 16. conditions
between Smithers and Terrace. .

“The Minister's reply said fur-
ther, “Looking at the whole high
way from Prince Rupert to Prince

George, I can say,.out of the

452.8 miles, 395.3 are blacktopped.
Of the remaining 57.5. miles: 16.7
miles have heen. reconstructed
prior to paving. Some clearing
contracts have been completed on
the remaining 40.6 miles and we
expect 49 call grading contracts in
the.near future”, =.

He pointed -out- that: in the ‘past
fifteen yearg the department. has
spent some. $38. million: on recon-
struction, paving and new bridges,
up to the end of. the current fiscal
year, .

Of the 132 miles between Smith-
ers and Terrace the Minister: said,
“Of. this. atretch,. 85.1. miles’ are
now blacktopped. andanother 12.8
miles reconstructed but not paved.
Some clearing contracts on the re-
mainder have now been completed
