A8 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, August 6, 2003 Dear Sir: After cleaning my glasses twice and re-read- Log now before rot sets in. CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD ing your article on the pine beetle infestation in both the Crown stands and the Nisga’a lands, it ap- pears to me that their gov- ernment has come to the conclusion that we non- aboriginals should be re- sponsible for their beetle mess as well a as our own. It would be nice if someone would put a ceiling on these surprise costs that we taxpayers have to eat. To- morrow the moon might stop between the sun and the earth and stay there. Would that be our Fault, tao? I refuse to be held responsible for anything that hap- pened to this country before June 16, 1953. That’s when J became of age, Also, [ am older than more than 80 per cent of the natives who live in this country. Somehow we have turned this whole mess into a ra- cial thing and my seniority isn’t worth a damn, When I was falling mainline right-of-way this side of the villages,, a lot of the fellows from Aiyansh and Can-— yon City would come out to visit. Some of them would try their hand at the saw. They would even help us and jokingly say, “Hurry up.” They wanted to have access to the outside world, . Those fellows are my age now. I wonder if they re- member this. The bugs are the only thing that makes any sense of this matter. This is, 1 think, nature’s way of killing off the pine to let the sun reach the undergrowth of cedar, hemlock and The Mail Bag balsam which in turn recreates the old growth forest that was there before. 1 also think there must be a market for bug-killed pine if itis logged quickly enough. All I can see wrong with it is a one of two inch blue ring around the cambium layer which some people find quite attractive. In the Southern USA, they had a similar bug infesta- tion and the woodpeckers got at it also, which made the lumber unmarketable. That is until the name ‘peckerwood’ was coined by some inventive person: who doubled the price, compared to the standard good lum- ber. This was done to accommodate the buyers who thought there would be something wrong with it if it wasn’l expensive, When the name caught on, the price and the demand went higher and higher until the loggers couldn't supply the mills fast enough. I would suggest we log it now. Get the logging done before the rot sets in, Then we would be able to get some value out of what is otherwise a total toss and low- er the chances of a major fire starting in the dry standing and blown down beetle-Killed timber. Allan Kennedy, Terrace, B.C. Kermode would be tough sell Dear Sir: Now that Vancouver is to host the 2010 Winter Olympics games, our local politicians are ‘working hard to have the Kermode bear made the official mascot of the 2010 Winter Games. By choosing the Kermode, the lower mainland would show its dedication to include all of British Columbia in the celebrations. I hope they do. But my guess is the 2010 mascot will be a marmot. A whistler would be good advertisement for the resort com- munity that will feature prominently in the games. Be- sides, in 2002 Salt Lake City had “Coal”, the black bear Thanks, Joanne Dear Sir: Re: road improvements on Hwy37, Kitimat — Terrace _ Normally I would not praise or congratulate a politi- cian for doing what they should be doing in the first place. However, I believe a public word of praise should be forwarded to Joanne Monaghan for vigorously pursu- ing the upgrade in classification of Hwy37. With support of the community and others, the change in classifica- tion should provide more monies to assure appropriate snow clearing, ice removal, etc. This in turn should re- sult in serious accidents being avoided or reduced along with lives being saved. This is also an example of elect- ed officials listening to their constituency. On the issue of Alcan power sales, the community and council could learn a lot from Kitimat about lobby- ing and community support, especially in attempting to save jobs and businesses in the Kitimat — Terrace region. Once again a big hand to everyone who participated. Ross Slezak, Terrace, B.C. “fares + Indicated are one way, valid at time of printing and vaely te new w bookings only. The close resemblance of a Kermode bear stuffed toy or cartoon character to a polar bear will make the Kermode a hard self as a unique symbol for British Columbia and the 2010 Games. One final comment, Is not a black bear, even with blond fur, an odd choice for a winter mascot. But then so is a marmot, which also spends the cold months in a den. Yet there is that cute tradition concerning a ground- hog and its shadow. Lenard Lindstrom, Terrace B.C.
