Several precious metal mines have been developed (or have good potential for development), and: many are supported by air access only. :: The airport is strategically located for mine servicing and as a conduit for commuting work- ers. The report goes on to state that increased air cargo volumes are largely a result of mineral in- Lares 70 4535 Greig Avenue, Terrace, B.C, V8G 1M? . ; SUBSCRIPTION ORDER FORM 1 year — $39.00, plus GST Close Up magazine, $10 extra In Terrace and Thornhill dustry servicing; an estimated 2.9 million Ibs. of freight was shipped through the airport in 1988. But Andrew Webber of the Kitimat-Stikine Regional Dis- trict says there is still some pre- judice against the airport, much of it connected with the unpre- dictable weather in this area. Although not much can be done about the weather, Transport Canada has implemented new landing procedures, such as reducing the minimum descent altitudes from 907 feet above ground level to 527 feet. This greatly improves the likelihood of planes being able to land. In 1990, the localizer was relo- cated slightly and equipped with more modern electronics. The next major operational improve- ment will coincide with the in- stallation of a Microwave Lan- ding System (MLS), targeted for early 1995. The MLS is a true landing aid, providing guidance to aircraft through their entire descent to the runway. ‘Over the long term, Webber says the Terrace-Kitimat airport will prove more and more re- liable. ‘‘The challenge is to get that message out to the mining companies.”’ (1 Cheque © Money Order C Master Card [1 Visa Please send a subscription to: Card No. Name Address Expiry Date Pesta Code Mail or bring this form to: Out of Canada $100.00 Seniors In Terrace and District $30.00 Seniors outside of Terrace and District $33.00 Terrace Review 4535 Greig Avenue, Tarrace, B.C. As the minerals industry in the northwest develops, it is hoped that these industry people, and their suppliers, contractors and consultants will consider the City of Terrace as an accessible and important service centre. Tourism and Economic Development Officer, Peter Monteith said the mayor and council have agreed to once again send in the smoked salmon hors d’oeuvres for the dinner prior to the dance on Friday evening, March ist at the Pan Pacific Hotel in Vancouver. Monteith has indicated that he and Alderman Danny Sheridan will represent the City of Terrace, and will be in attendance for most of the activities. Mayor Jack Talstra says, "We know which side our -bread is buttered on, and how very important the mining industry is to our economy.
