Diane Jones-Konihowski,
who turned in the world's
best pentathion performance
of 1978 at the Commonwealth
Games, is the runaway
choice as Canada's woman
athlete of the year.

The Edmonton track and
field star received more than
twice as many votes as her
nearest compelitor, golfer

Sherk of Fonthill, Ont.,
won the Ontario, Canadian,
United States and world
amateur women's golf titles
in 1978.

She placed second in the
voting by a narrow margin
over swimmer Wendy Quirk
of Pointe Claire, Que., who

become the first recipient of
the Bobbie Rosenfeld Award
to be presented in con-
junction with the Sports
Federation of Canada
awards in Toronto Jan. 13.

It will be the first time CP
has presented an award to
the winner of its annual poll,
first conducted in 1933.

The award, in the form of a
commemorative

athlete best known for her
gold-medal performance in
the sprints at the 1928 Olym-
pics. In 1950, she was named
woman athlete of the half
century in the CP poll,
Jones-Konihowski was the
Canadian star of the Com-
monwealth Games track
competition in Edmonton
last August, winning the
