tomato. : WHILE MOST PEOPLE are wondering 4 what to put ia their gardens this year, Lissi i and Peder Sorensen are already tending tiny budding tomatoes. Peder will be at the farmers market by the end of June with plenty of juicy tomatoes, garlic, chives and : cucumbers. i Like many others at the market, Lissi and Peder came to Canada from Europe. They were both born in Denmark — Peder in Ringkobing’ (Jutland, the west coast) and Lissi.in Copenhagen, Lissi lefl Denmark with her parents Chris and Elna Odin when she was 10 years old. Their long journey began with a week long voyage, with a stop over in Norway, and andther week by train from Halifax to Prince George. Later Mr. Odin and a friend (Lindberg Carlsen) decided to look for work in Prince Rupert, however, their car broke down near Terrace. They were towed into town, and while waiting for repairs they had a job of- fer, with the CN to work on the new line going to Kitimat. So, Lissi and ber mother moved to Ter- race while her father worked out of Kitimat. Later on Mr. and Mrs, Odin worked as bull cooks and kitchen workers at the old Can Cel bunk houses that were situated where the Twin River Estates sland today. Lindberg Carlsen was the blacksmith in Terrace for many years. Lissi’s parents found it very hard when they came to Canada. They didn’t speak any English and were very homesick, Lissi left Terrace to take a hairdressing course in Calgary. That’s where she met Peder, in 1958. Later on she would work dor Hilda ; ‘Neuhoven, at the hairdressers ‘eon “Yhac ised lo" be on~Lakelse ‘near’ the" “Banko Nova Scotia, - ‘Peder left Ringkobing Denmark in 1956 for Toronto, He saw a Tot of the country IF YOU don’t mind sharing a dressing room with a six-foot tal] invisible rabbit, then you might want to audition for the up- coming play Harvey. Peder was an agricultural green house worker in Denmark. In Calgary he worked as att clecirician for $1 an hour. Affer a holiday in Terrace, in 1962, Peder and Lissi decided to pack up in Calgary and move to Terrace. They lived on a farm in Old Remo and were among the first to come involved with the farmer's market, which started in 1983. Peder did most of the garden work and Lissi ran their stand at the market. They were a part of the small core group that got the market going, and Peder even managed the market at one lime, It was through the devotion of these beginning vendors that the market established itself. The Sorensens now live on Agar Ave. Their town size lot is packed full of fresh garden produce bound for the market. Peder _warks the stand. at the markét,'these days.
