“Oct. 30 to Nov. 5 is National "Crime Prevention Week and its a time when everyone should consider their individual role in the prevention of crime. A quick - look. at a few facts, however, “and many people may say, Why bother?”’, . by Tod Strachan “When you ‘compare the first -. . 10 months of this year in the Terrace | area’ with the same period i in 1988, you find break ‘and enters and impaired driving _ infractions have dropped about 12 percent and motor vehicle ac- cidents have risen by only four “percent. ‘Another set of numbers may not be so encouraging, though. ‘While there has been a drop in nearly 150 private homes and _ businesses have been broken in- to this year. There have also been about 150 drivers charged with impaired driving. Even though a four percent increase in _ the number of motor vehicle ac- cidents may seem acceptable of downtown traffic this year compared to last, there have been over 400 accidents, some of. which have resulted in serious. injuries. ‘You may believe ‘this is a - policing problem, but that’s not true. Crime affects everyone. It may have been someone else’s home that was broken into, or another driver’s car that was destroyed in an accident, but you still pay through insurance premiums. It’s time to fight back and there are a great: number of things any communi- ty can do... if they have the will. _ First, every resident must ‘make a conscious ‘effort to become more observant, It you notice a suspicious character loitering around your neigh- borhood, an erratic driver who may or may not be impaired, or anything else that doesn’t seem quite right, don’t get involved but do. write down the details. ‘Physical description, clothing, time of day, type of activity, licence number — any small detail that might help police positively identify the person or persons involved. Second, immediately phone the police at 635-4911, give them your name, address and the details you have recorded. In ‘most cases, you can remain anonymous, but the police may ‘Need to contact you for. further details, An anonymous call to the police may be of little or no value at all, - _ The third thing you can do is get involved in any one of a number of crime prevention ac- tivities.
