Blanas goes on to interior playdowns at Kamloops at the end of February. ; Terrace’s Blanes wins Junior men’s curling Richard Blanes of Terrace won the junior men’s zone six curling berth on the Jan. 16 weekend, and earned a trip to B.C. interior junior men’s finals at Kamloops starting Feb. 29, Blanes started by winning ‘A’ side of the double-knockout | four-team playdown. He defeated Ken Scherk of Prince ~ Rupert 9-3, then edged Garnett Collinson of Smithers 6-5. _In other ‘A’ side action, Col- linson beat clubmate Darren ~ Dohler 8-3. ij In ‘B’ side action, Scherk eliminated Dohler 6-2, then knocked out Collinson 9-4, The ‘B’ final saw Scherk hand Blanes his only loss — 7-1. This set up . an extra game which Blanes won 8-2. Lisa Dams had 15 points, Kinton ’ poured in 22 for Orcas, Meanwhile, in Junior ‘A’ girls’ basketball play at Terrace at the same time, Prince Rupert’s Booth Ravenettes scored a pair of easy wins. They beat Terrace Skeena 69-10 and bounced Kitimat 70-4. In the other game, Kitimat defeated Skeena 44-15, Thornhill hosted the junior ‘B’ girls in a mini-tournament on the same day. Hazelton won this series with a 51-33 victory over Houston in the final. Thornhill won the sports- manlike team award. Hazeltun’s Heather Morrison was named most valuable player. Terrace won four out of six games in the six-team series, with both losses inflicted by the Fort squad. In the round-robin section, Terrace started with a 9-4 vic- tory over Mackenzie. Shane Maitland and Doug Stewart led the way with two-goal efforts. Singles went to Jared Ewart, Jason Krug, Clint Preset, Vin- ney Redmond and Trevor Gib- son, Game two was a 9-1 victory over Dawson Creek. Mike Wiebenga fired a hat trick while Stewart and Prest had two each. Singles went to Davey Jones and Redmond. Their third straight win was a 17-0 pasting of Fairview, Alber- ta. Maitland had five goals and Stewart had four. Wiebenga contributed another hat trick while singles went to Redmond, Jones, Prest, Gibson, and Den- nis Bannister. Prince George added some Granisle commercial players next day, but it didn’t help as we won 14-0. Shinde had a five-goal game.
