ALBERNI AFTERMATH:
Greater disaster struck the Al-
bernis than our concerned offi-
cials have stated or allowed the
news media to reveal. The Can-
adian Army is still doing good
work cleaning up devastated
homes and lots. The fifty thou-
sand dollars put up by our bene-
volent Provincial Government
along with the fifty thousand put
up by the big company is about
two percent of the cost of re-
habilitating the working people
who lost all their possessions.

It looks like two percent is
better than no percent. Our
Prime Minister has offered his
American counter-part all the
assistance they feel they will
need to get the Alaskans back on
their feet. Who said charity be-
gins at home? it certainly wasn’t
a Canadian Prime Minister.

STRIKE BEGINS AT FORTY:
The forty cents demanded by the
British Columbia Lumber work-
ers will cost the big companies
almost thirty million dollars
which is small potatoes, only
ten percent of the profit from
the industry. That would only
leave the poor companies a meas-
ly two hundred seventy-three
million dollars profit. How can
they survive the pinch?

Still the forty cents wouldn’t
make any rich loggers. They have
a good chance to get their de-
mands by militant action, no
company wants to be off work in

this potential high profit year.

like water fluoridation will be an

THE road from Alberni to To-
fino, (not) maintained by Mac
and Bloe, is in deplorable condi-

it pays lip service to the cause
of peace, and is compelled by the
facts of life to trade with China
and recognize Cuba, continues to
be bedevilled by a subservient
attitude to the United States.

This was the point made by one
of the key resolutions to emerge
from the deliberations ofthe 18th
convention of the Communist
Party of Canada, heldin Toronto,
March 27-30.

The resolution calls for re-
moval of nuclear weapons from
Canada; work to break the im-
passe at the Geneva Disarmament
Conference by advocating step-
by-step actions to actually com-
mence disarmament; anda
declaration by Ottawa that Canada
is a nuclear-free zone. __

It also calls for recognition of
the People’s Republic of China.

The resolution also urged a
vast extension of trade with
socialist countries and newly-
independent states; rejection of
the proposal that Canada join the
Organization of American States;
non-intervention in the internal
affairs of other countries; and a
cut in the arms budget.

Another matter receiving
priority at the meet was the ques-
tion of French Canada and how
the crisis of Confederation is to
be solved.

at ‘PT’ labor forum

Last Sunday saw the opening
session of atwo-part labor forum
on the theme: “Autonomy — How
To Achieve It?” The forum, spon-
sored by the Pacific Tribune,
drew over 40 people into the

Charles Stewart (Amalgamated
Transit Union) and Harvey
Murphy (Mine Mill) stated their
opinions on the subject, answered
many questions and listened to
several comments from the audi-
ence.

Several other prominent labor
leaders did not attend for one
reason or another. The commit-
tee which prepared the forumsis
hopeful that those missing last
Sunday will be in attendance for
the next session this coming Sun-

day, April 12.
