MERWYN MARKS, manager, People’s Cooperative Bookstore, 337 West Pender, Vancouver, B.C.: I want to make some obser- *. vations on the novel Fatherless Sons by Dyson Carter as a means of commending it to your readers: Here is a book that ‘actually blazes a new path in Canadian writing. It concerns itself with real life problems of a large section of thee Canadian people today. The story is exciting and sustained over its 480 pages. I have had the chance to discuss this book with a good few dozen of its readers and . the overwhelming majority ac- claim it. True enough, the book has its faults and shortcomings, but it is the finest novel of the Canadian working peoplé yet written in the opinion of myself and many others. This year, as part of our growing Canadian national con- sciousness, Canadian publish+ ers have produced a_ larger number of books, good both in quantity and many in quality. After reading the recent novels of Roger Lemelin, Gabri- elle Roy, Mordecai Richler, Earle Birney, Andre Langevin and others, Dyson Carter’s book stands out for the value of its story. It is possible some may find a few of the other authors have better literary style but the power of description’ in Fatherless Sons makes it a book that will appeal above any of the others to the readers of your paper. : But the sad fact is that this book is not having the sale it © — paper edition — cloth edition Hobson, Jr. Hobson, Jr. good outdoor true story Kelvie — Illustrated GOOD BOOKS MAKE LASTING GIFTS BRITISH COLUMBIA BOOKS LEGENDS OF VANCOUVER — E. If more such books are going to be written, progressive people must purchase them, The fact is that Carter had to go out and raise the money himself to enable Progress Books to’ have sufficient funds to. print the book. Ordinary publishers don’t take chances these days. Costs of book pro- duction have been climbing | steadily-over the past few years. and they are, alas, going to be still higher shortly. Howard Fast, after being blacklisted, has been able to set up his own publishing house and sell his books in sufficient quantity to keep. going. In turn this has enabled several other small publishing houses like Cameron and Kahn to be established ‘in the United States. Dyson Carter is’ pioneering the way for other honest Can- adian writers to have their books published provided they get the support of the people for whom they write. Certainly Carter himself merits that sup- port and I would appeal to everyone concerned with the real freedom of the writer to “produce literature of service to humanity; to get copies of Fatherless Sons. It has been my privilege to be the manager of the People’s Cooperative Bookstore for 2 little over seven years now — and this is my first letter push- ing a book.
