Rovers plan own destiny — TERRACE -— Rovers is a co-educational program for young adults 17-23 years. This program is designed to encourage young adults to become. self-directing personalities and responsible _partici- pants in the world around them. The program objectives for the Rovers section are as follows: To promote self devel- opment, to help the indivi- dual in establishing their own life style and a sense of self-identity, individual attitudes, skills and val- ues. To ensure an atmos- phere that places value on spiritual depth, human joy and a sense of humor, To provide for partici- pation in group oriented activity, to develop mean- ingful and lasting friend- ships, to complement the need for self discovery and personal freedom, within - the context of the group responsibility and ac- countability. To provide opportunities for mem- bers to develop physically and to participate in satis- fying outdoor activities. To become aware and understand the needs of the community, partici- pate in community affairs and actively aid in the de- velopment of a_ better society. Today Rovers are invol- ved in challenging and ex- citing programs. Rovers are the planners of their own destiny; and through crew programs continue to carry out Rovering as it was conceived by the Founder. Scout program section Most of these activities place great stress on living and playing in the out- doors, in harmony with nature and the environ- ment. Hiking, exploring, camping, as well as sum- mer and winter sports and games comprise the. prin- ‘cipal themes .of the Boy Scouts program. ‘The indoor activities are mainly oriented to acquir- ing the necessary skills and knowledge required for tures in the outdoors. The program is design- . ed for boys five, six and seven years of age and it shares the aim of Scout- ing’s other programs which is: ‘“‘To help boys to. develop their character as resourceful and responsi- ble members of the com- munity by providing op- . portunities and guidance for their mental, physical, social and spiritual. - development.”’ More specifically the objectives of the Beaver program are to help boys: @ develop an awareness of nature e@ develop an awareness of God @ allow a means of self ~ expression @ develop a feeling of — belonging | @ developa sense of shar- ing @ have an energy outlet -@ join in group activities @ learn through fun @ be happy @ show love and joy __. Within these guidelines a leadership team of “parents, other adults and teenagers,. work together to provide a program that will be creative, flexible and fun and geared to meet the needs of their boys. Beavers meet weekly in groups of 20 to 25 boys called colonies. Within colonies smaller groups of five or six boys are called lodges. Beavers attend their meetings in their blue and brown uniforms. These beaver colors repre- sent the sky and water and . the earth and the beavers: coat. The uniforms consist - of a hat, a vest which can be worn over the boys or- dinary clothing, and a neckerchief :which a boy Beaver must know his law . and promise and his open-. ing and closing cermonies.
