While. Nadia Commaneci soared to superstardom at the Montreal Olympics nine Terrace residents were learning why Bach, Beethoven, Debussy, Wagner and Stravinski were among the greats in the field of music. The nine people were participants in a well- rounded course on music appreciation at the Summer School of the Arts in Terrace. They met eight times during a two week period and learned the technical basics of sym- phonic compositions. The instructor of the course was George Schram, - .who, in the few months he has worked for the School ” District, has become a well known personality as school _ band -conductor and in- structor. The course was not. designed for people with any particular background . in music, although most of the people who attended the course were sufficiently versed in the language of 2, ENTERTAINMENT, THE HERALD, Wed. Schram discussed the various perieds in the history of music, including Antiquity, 350-600; Middle Ages, 600-1300: Gothic, 1200- 1450; Renaissance, 1400- 1600; Baroque, 1600-1750; Classic, 1750-1825 (classical music is only by composers of this period); and Romantic, 1825-1900. while Debussy was an in- novator of French im- pressionism and Beethoven stressed musical quality. Schram discussed the texture and the structure of | music as well as the elements of music. He examined the main purpose Bach and Beethoven, for iim a example, are not classical “music composers.
