THE CORPORATION OF THE erry OF PORT COQUITLAM MEMORANDUM 0 OCT 17 18 TO: B. Kirk, October 12, 1983 City Administrator FROM: FeE. Peters., P. Eng., City Engineer SUBJECT:. Pedestrian Crosswalk at Pitt River Road/Columbia Public Works Committee, October ltth, 1983 RECOMMENDATION: That the existing crosswalk be maintained in its Present location. BACKGROUND AND COMMENTS: uction of a sidewalk on the west of Pitt River Road, a location to see whether on the north side of the intersection located on the south side. The intersection is somewhat staggered with the south curb west of PItt River Road lining up with the center of Columbia Street east of Pitt River Road. This makes It awkward to Install a crosswaik at a convenient location on the south side of the intersection. Also because of this stagger, children proceeding to and from the Sidewalk tend to cut diagonally ‘across the intersection rather than crossing either on the north or the south side. The pedestrian counts indicate that there are many more children crossing on the north side than on the south side. The reason for this does not appear to be because the crosswalk is there but because the store is on the north corner. Of the 27 chi-tdren returning home from schoo! during the survey period, 15 of them stopped off at the store and 6 others had destinations on the north side of the intersection. A report from the R.C.M.P. also agreed that the crosswalk was in the correct location, Richie MAINT ARTS AP ORIN Acta Hae ee cenrecey 1A F.E.
