B4 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, October 13, 1993 COMMUNITY KITCHENS A new weapon in battle c on hunger © -O MANY of our Thanksgiving tra- ditions revolve . around food. ‘Yet for-some, it’s a challenge to put food on the table. ‘World Food Day on October 16th, is-a time to think about where Gur food comes from, and where it’s going to. Across Canada, there are about one million children living below the poverty line.. That’s one child in six. Living in a low income fam- ily puts them at a lot of risk for poor nutrition and hunger. Here in Terrace, the figures are no different, but there’s a variety of solutions to the problem of hun per. _ One answer is to donate to the Food Bank. The Food Bank feeds every- one, not only people on Social ’ Assistance, but an increasing number of people from work- ing families. They're just having ¢ a harder time making ends meet. But it’s the mission of the Food Hospital auxilliary returns Contributed MILLS MEMORIAL Hospital Ladies Auxilliary were guests at the Northwest conference heid in Prince Rupert on Sep24-26.° ‘There: were. seven auxilliarles there withs; Tertace’ Feneing 10 ladies, “That Saturday we had t “very”. ” constructive day with meetings “ all morning which were very in- formative, updating us on ali the news from other auxiliaries, Our guest speaker from Prince | ‘George was Loraine, Grant, also RCMP ‘Constable Ruth McLea gave a very interesting « “talle on personal safety for women.- In the evening we had a lovely dinner with some great enteral. ment. Ina way, it’s the most valu- able currency of all: the build- ing blocks of life. While all donations are gratefully accepted, there ate some items that the food bank does need more of. These are foods like powdered milk, canned meats and fish, peanut butter, and canned beans. Baby foods always make a good donation. Or, you could make a gift of staple goods like macaroni, rice or dried beans and legumes. Another idea is for people with gardens. Produce dona- tions is one way to make good use of the excess bounty of your home gardens. This can be one solution to the *“What can I do with ALL of these Carrois and Zuc- chini?”’ dilemma. Foods can be donated direct- ly to the Food Bank at 3304 Sparks Street. They can also be dropped off at bins in your local grocery store. If you have no food to donate, but still want to help out, the Food Bank will gratefully accept donations of cash (or che- ques!) Another answer to the prab- lem of hunger in Terrace is to join or support a Community Kitchen, This is a very old idea, whose time has come again, Long ago, People used to. gather together to prepare their food in groups, This meant that all the people and “their families would be fed. Everyone would also have the benefits of socializing, and the support of the group. In a Community kitchen, much the same thing happens. A group of people get togeth- er, and decide on what recipes to cook.. They pool their money, and go out to shop for the récipes they’ve chosen. By pooling their resources, they save money and time. Money is saved because things are cheaper by the dozen, That is, the more you buy of some- thing, the less you have to pay for cach single item.
