_ Congratulations to Branch 13 of the Royal Canadian Legion on winning the Best Non-Commercia Float award and the best Parade Entry in the Annual Lions River Boat Parade. The float was magnificent, a real tribute to the Legion's Golden Anniversary and a pleasure for the people of Terrace to survey, Comrade Bud Kirkaldy and the many pee le he directed should be ig y commended for the results of their efforts. Thank you also to our Second Vice-President without whose ‘‘in- terjection’” at a touchy moment the float may not have made it through the streets of Terrace. If you have noliced the- absence of many of our Air Cadets from Terrace recently it is because fourteen of the cadets are away to camps. Pharmacists introduce drug controls President Gerry Lundren of Victoria announced the new controls over drug distribution that the College of Pharmacists will be implementing this August Ist. Mr. Lundgren stated, ‘Federal legislation per- taining to drugs is prin- cipally concerned with the manufacturing, labelling, effectiveness and designation of prescription only drugs.”” But legislative control over drug distribution is a provincial prerogative and is ex- pressed in the respective provincial Pharmacy Acts, Bylaws and Regulations. “In BC.C."’, he continued, “the responsibility for’ administering the Phar- macy Act is vested in the Council of the College of Pharmacists'’. This Council, over which he is president, takes its responsibility seriausly and the role motivation for these new controls comes from a professional commitment to protect the public from its unknowing misuse of non- prescription medications. Mr. Lundren went on to say,, “over the last few years, the Council has become increasingly con- cerned over society's growing use of drugs. This increasing reliance upon the chemical crutch to obtain curtailed. With this ob- jective in mind,” he con- tinued, “Council is now requiring all pharmacists to become more involved with patients and their drug purchases. ‘Henceforth’, he said, “pharmacists must relocate their non-prescription medications so they are visible to the pharmacist and within 20 feet of the dispensary. This area must, he visually distinct from the balance of the premises and be designated as the ‘Pharmacy’ by means of special pharmacy signs. Through the use of uniquely designed shelf-talkers,” he continued, “it is Council’s wish “lo make the® public’ more aware and thoughtful : of its drug purchases sothal . .each individual will more closely balance his‘or her - purchases to their actual medication needs. Many common ailments, such as constipation or some headaches, may be more appropriately treated by minor changes in diet or life .Style, ralher than by pop- ping a pill”. Mr. Ludgren then went on to state thal, ‘‘in addition lo these changes, certain. other medications can no longer be purchased on a_ self- service basis in this provinee. Those medications having a rapid and easy relieffrom greater potential to cause common ailments must ‘be distress must be obtained business for himself. The most common cancer sites in women are located in parts of the body that can be easily examined by a doctor. This would aid early detection, so crucial to the possibility of = cure, . The five principle cancer sites in women, with their incidence out of every 100 caficer cases, are: breast-- 25 cases: skin--17; intestine- rectum--12; uterus--1L; and cervix--6. ; - This year, the Canadian Cancer Seciety’s education program is concentrating on two effective and important precautions women can take to protect their health-- breast self-examination and ‘the Pap test. The best screening method for breast cancer can be done by women themselves. Breast self- examination practised monthly in the privacy of the home, takes little time but will enable a woman te discover unusual conditions of the bréast in time for early and effective treatment.
