This, of hat now in M Indignant Algerian course, is not acceptable and will not resolve the problems either in the interests of Israel, the Arab states or world peace. Arab military defeat People. are asking: What caused the military defeat of the Arab states? It is of course too soon after the events to give an exhaustive answer. But some ex- planation can be given. In the first place, the side which fires the first shot has great advan- tages; and there is no doubt that the Israeli armed forces fired the first shot. It is obvious also - that the military intelligence on the part of the Arab states was inept, to say the least. - It has been admitted that Is- rael surprised the Arab states both with the unexpected power of its attack and, more import- ant, with the unexpected direc- tion of the attack. The Arab states anticipated the attack to come from the east and north instead of the west. This sur- prise direction of the attack left the air forces vulnerable to dis- truction before they could get off the ground. The war was won in the first few hours of the Israeli attack. To this should be added two other factors. First, the sharp conflicts within the Arab coun- tries and the disunity among the Arab states. Second, the far- Teaching social reforms carried through by the group of, pro- demonstrators throwing stones at U.S. cultural centre. gressive Arab states were in the main carried through from above, without the full demo- cratic participation of the people. There are those who argue that it is academic to determine as to who fired the first shot in the Middle East. Even though it has been proven that it was Israel that fired the first shot some peo- ple still refuse to accuse Israel of aggression. The issue of de- termining as to who is the ag- gressor in today’s world, living as we do.in a condition of a balance of terror, is a matter of life and death. For a long time the atom ma- niacs have been advocating “‘pre- ventative war’. This theory ad- vances the idea that to meet a real or an imaginary threat you ate justified firing the first shot and that it is the threat and not the actual starting of a war that constitutes aggression. The lo- gic of this theory is that the victim of aggression is really the aggressor. No wonder peo- ple say that the world has gone mad and is upside down. This insane logic is being applied by some to determine who was the aggressor in the eix-day Middle East war. Who are the enemies of the Jews? No one should have any illu- sions that a solution of the prob- lems in the Middle East will be ‘easy. The legacy and bitterness engendered by the events in the last six days, as well as the ‘history of wars and conflicts in this area, have if anything made the settlement of the outstand- ing questions more difficult. Yet, only a peaceful political solution can bring stability and lasting peace to all the people in that area. The problem cannot be re- duced to a conflict between Arab or Jew, although this is in the picture. The real conflict is that between imperialism and anti-imperialist revolutions. Those who allow themselves to be carried away by sentimen- talism and place reliance for security in imperialism, British or U.S., have learned nothing from the horrors of past and re- cent history. Who was respon- sible for the distruction of six million Jews? Was it the Arab, the African, Asian or Latin American people? These people are paying dearly in life and wealth ever since imperialism made its appearance on the world scene. It is German imperialism which bears responsibility for the almost complete destruction of the Jewish people and mil- lions of people of other nations. It was British, French, Italian, Japanese and U.S. imperialists who built up Hitlerism, under the smoke screen of fighting communism, and who therefore share responsibility and guilt By CHRIS: HARNATTY OTTAWA “Drop flowers, not bombs.” This was the theme of a peace demonstration held here Sat- urday, June 10. Two things were more or less unique to this demonstration — flowers and children. At 10.30 a.m. about 30 chil- dren, between the ages of 4 and 12, assembled at Le Monde Coffee House, along with a few teenagers and parents. Armed with armfuls of Ottawa children: "Drop flowers, not bombs’ flowers the children walked slowly to the U.S. embassy on Wellington Street, where they assembled into a line. After about 15 minutes an embassy official agreed to ac- cept the flowers from the chil- dren, who were admitted into the building three or four at a time. The children presented the flowers, along with a letter calling on the United’ States to end its bombing of the De- mocratic Republic of Vietnam immediately. The march was organized by the Ottawa Committee to End the War in Vietnam, which has several other pro- jects planned for this sum- mer. Among these will be a “Week of the Angry Arts,” beginning on June 13, which will include folk singing and: poetry reading, handicraft displays, a chamber music concert, and a hootenanny. Beginning July 1 (Canada Day) there is to be a daily peace vigil on Parliament Hitl, which will continue until Aug. 6--Hiroshima Day. iddle East crisis? for human suffering. Can any decent person really believe, on the basis of bitter experience, that U.S. imperial- ism has any more regard for the Jewish people, than for the Arab people, the Latin American people or the Vietnamese peo- ple? : To imperialism the common people are objects of exploita- tion and serve as human manure to’ fertilizé the soil from which their greed and lust for profits is .derived. It is strange in- deed, that anti-Semites, ultra‘ Rights, who are dreaming of the day to complete “the German finat solution of the Jewish question” are part of the anti- Arab hysteria and “pro Israel’. Politics surely make strange bed fellows. The fact is that there is no real conflict of interest between Arabs and Jews — on the con- trary, their interests coincide and their common enemy is im- perialism. It is those forces in Israel- which have hitched Is- rael’s destiny to the imperialist chariot and the recent army forces in the Arab world which endanger both Israel and Arab security and their future well being. The day will come when these forces will be defeated by the Israeli and Arab people. Must withdraw © In the bargaining that will take’ place now after the guns have been silenced, Israel must be ready to withdraw from con- quered Arab territory. It must be ready to cooperate to solve the Arab refugee problem. It must act in all respects as a Middle East state and not as a representative or a tool of im- perialism. It must show sym- pathy for the legitimate national and social aspiration of the Arab people. In return the Arab states must recognize the legitimate right of the state of Israel to exist, they must recognize the state of Israel and its right of access to the gulf of Aqaba and the Suez Canal. The state of war which has been in existence for 19 years must be ended. A peace treaty guaranteeing the integrity and independence of all states in the Middle East must be signed. Such bargaining will be beneficial and meaningful for Israel, for the Arab States and for the world community. The United Nations must play its full role in such negotiations. Eight Arab states have broken off diplomatic relations with the United States. and Britain. The Arab states are now in the pro- cess of taking over the oil and the pipe lines from the imperial- ist oil trusts and stopping all shipments of oil to the Western countries. These legitimate ac- tions are causing a panic in most of the capitals of the imperialist countries. At time of writing three socialist countries, the Soviet Union, Bulgaria and Czechoslovakia, have broken off diplomatic relations with Israel. These developments may spell the end of imperialist domina- tion in the Middle East and turn -a military defeat into a political, economic and- social advance. Wherever and whenever impe- rialism, particularly U.S. im- perialism, is weakened: the peo- ple are the victors. June 23, 1967—PACIFIC TRIBUNE—Page 3 savor Sarat
