CANADA V3B 1A5 (604) 941-6216 July 9, 1979 The Mayor & Council City of Port Coquitlam 2272 McAllister Street Port Coquitlam, B.C. Dear Sirs: Re - Best Western Sign It would appear we have run across somewhat of a problem with our sign in that the top "emblem" section of our sign has flashing lights which we are told is contrary to local bylaws, , By way of background information, this sign was manufectured in Memphis , Tennessee in accordance with normal specifications for all Best iestern signs for their properties throughout the world which now number more than 2,000 locations, We would like to point out that this was the type of highway sign proposed by Best Western and ccnsidered appropriate after given.the details of our location, access, etc, when we initially applied for our franchise, The matter of the flashing lights would at this point require an exception from Best Western if they were to be permanently disconnected, ‘We have been told by our electrician that this would also be a costly operation as it would essentially require rewiring the entire emblem portion of the sign. * Quite apart from the foregoing, if we are to listen-to the so called experts at Best Western headouarters in Phoenix, we feel the flashing sign would possibly assist us in establishing our new operation in Port Coouitlam and for that reason we are somewhat reluctant to deviate from recommended and thoroughly tested procedures that Best Western have, We do not feel that the sign has been done distastcfully or for that matter that the sign is distracting to traffic due to its location sctback some 50 ~ 60 fect from tho Lougheed Highway.
