B6 - The Tarrace Standard, Wednesday, February 19, 2003 The Nisga'a New Year Is cause for joy in the Nass © THE TINY village of Git- winksihikw hosts a huge traditional celebration this - weekend: Hoobiyee, the, Nisga’a New Year festival. - Residents of Terrace, the Prince Rupert-Port Ed-— : lebrate Hoobiyee each ward area, Kincolith, Greenville and New ' Aiyansh are expected to converge on Gitwink- sihlkw, banks high above the Nass River. The Feb, 21 and 22 fes- tivities include Nisga’a - food, songs and dances. This year’s theme is K'ali yeeht daxhi gat, or “gaining strength”. Hoobiyee is a tradition- al gathering celebrating Nisga’a culture, values and way of life that’s en- dured for centuries. These days, the purpose of the festival is to reaffirm cul- tural traditions on tradi- tional territory by sharing them with younger gener- ations. The Nisga’a say their ancestors eagerly watched the night sky after the new moon in February for signs of the coming harvest. A tipped or slanted moon signalled a poor harvest, so conservation of winter stores had to conti- nue. But a horizontal moon was cause for joy, because it meant people would have everything they would require for their daily lives and for feasts in the coming year. The society is inviting everyone to a cedar tree _ blessing ceremony at noon Saturday Feb. 22. The fist | log is intended for a 54- foot canoe, A second log that will be carved into a 58-foot paddle will also be blessed. Once complete, the paddle would be the long- est of its type in the world. An hour later that same day, the canoe society holds at. the Salvation - Army Church - All Nass community groups, dance groups, schools, carvers and artists are invited to the meeting, which starts at | p.m. The canoe club is look- ing for committees to help plan an annual canoe ga- ‘thering and journey that’s held on. the coast, The club is also looking to host its own canoe ga- thering at Lava Lake in July of 2004.
