NATIONAL FAMILY WEEK

Just who exact
is our family?

FEW wecks ago my
seven year old came
upstaizs complaining
that a friend of his
older brother was teasing him.

This friend had been part of our
household since the two had at-
tended preschool together, some
14 years ago.

He'd raided the fridge, played
with toys, complained about my
music, shoveled the elderly
neighbor's driveway (under threat
of drastic consequences should he
decline my invitation to do so),
ate Christmas dinner, got yelled
at if he knocked at the door and
used my sewing machine.

He was comfortable in our
home, we were comfortable hav-
ing him.

I assured my youngest that he
“didn’t mean it”’, and that no he
didn’t have to tum aver the
remote control,

His immediale words were “‘He
does sol! Docs Phung have to be
in our family?!"’

This last few weeks with Na-
tional Family Week activities on
everybody’s mind at my place of
work I thought about the word.

Family.

What does it mean?

The dictionary defines family as
“Parents and their children; a
group of people connected by
blood or marriage and sharing
common ancestry; the members
of a household’’”

families. There are inter-racial

families, adoptive families.

But what is family?

How many times have

you heard “he’s not
really my unele, but
he’s just like family” or
“she’s just like a
mother to me’”’?

According to the dictionary is it
the person who is related to you
by blood? No, by definition
that's kinship.

Is it the person you marry?
“To take or join as husband or
wife” -- no mention of the word
family there.

Son? “A male offspring. ”
Daughter? ‘‘Female offspring of
a man or woman.”’

Brother? “‘A male who shares
the same parents as another per-
son.’?

Uncle, Grandmother, : cousin
third removed — none definitive-
ly defined as the person who is
“family.”

Family, like sorry, is an easy
word to say. To mean what we
