Small northern gold mine gears up for spring start A SMALL gold mine near the junction of Hwy37 and the road into Cassiar should be in opera- tion by next spring. . Work has already started on reviving the Erickson gold mine, mothballed since 1989, The operation is being run by Cusac Industries Ltd., owned by ~~ Guilford Brett who staked the area in the 1950s and 1960s. - Cusac opened a mine on the site in 1978 and went into partnership _ with Erickson in the mid-1980s, This latest venture comes after Cusac bought out Erickson and secured financing, Brett ex- plained recently, “We were able tu buy the as- _ sels at a very reasonable cost. We have a near new 300 tonne per . day’ mill, all the development work and 12 miles of road..It’s a fully permitted mine,”’ said Brett. The: money for the purchase, $2.6 million, came from Switzer- land. ; “We can now bring the mine back into production. We own it all,” said Brett. — ‘He added that the 1989 closure was not caused by poor ore or prices but by a corporate Erick- - son decision to get out of the mining business. ‘When Cusac owned 35 per- cent of the mine, the net profit, in ihe years 1985 to 1987 was $6.8 million,’’ said Brett. He said the purchase comes with an estimated $5 million spent by Erickson on develop- ment work in the mine’s latter years. And Brett belicves there is a net _ profit of $4 million sitting in the ground from reserves already taid out. A. crew is already on the site setting up a winterized camp so work can progress foward a March 1994 resumption of mill- ing. At full production Breit says the crew of underground miners and millers will average 30 people. He plans on running two un- derground shifis. “We've got applications by the hundreds. There’s no shortage of good, qualificd people,” said _ Brett. “The operation isn’t a fly in-fly out camp, added Brett, because ‘the mine is just off of Hwy37. “Tf guys. want to work, they Must ‘be prepared to stay in camp,’’ he said. ‘“They can go to Dease (Lake) for the weekend Condos eyed - A VICTORIA developer wants to build up to 44 condominium units ona piece of vacant land in the 24800 Block of Lazelle Ave. The proposal by Harriet Builders Ltd. would see at least 38 units constructed in what Surinder Mann, the builder for Harriet, calls affordable and needed housing. ‘The developer also wants to put in underground parking for the three-storey building but the cost, estimated at» $460,000, means more units would have to be built to pay for the feature, said Mann. -Harrict’s proposal now rests with the city’s. planning com- milles becausé' -the developer wants a variance to sctback regulations. | The problem, said Mann, is that the building’s placement on the property wouldn’t be compatible with the neighbouring. Woodgreen complex if existing selback requirements were fol- lowed. And cxisling setbacks would cancel plans for underground parking, he added. “All we want to do is shift the building over. We don’t want it to be too crowded,’’ Mann said. 15 LBS IN 3 WEEKS -YOU CAN TOO!
