The Herald, Tuesday, May 1, 1984 |. of a greasy spoon _ James Richardson. or WINNIPEG {CP) — It's been a long time since actors rehearsed in a Winnipeg coal cellar or ballet dan- ers performed free. ... It’s been a long time since the roof ofthe old Dominion Theatre fell in — literally -- or a theatre janitor led a charge of his drinking buddies; dressed in Ben Johnson costumes, out Into a blizzard, -..But early efforts to build up such artistic pillars as the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and the Manitoba Theatre Centre paid off. They are thriving today despite a dragging economy and stiff competition for dollars. - It’s never been easy. When Gweneth Lloyd and Betty Farrally arrived in Winnipeg in 1938, few people on the Prairies had ever seen a ballet, DANCED FOR KING . But one year later, the two British women and their fledgling dance company staged their _first production for visiting King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. From that beginning, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet has gone on to win international acclaim, and is as healthy today as it ever has been. Meanwhile, the Manitoba Theatre Centre, which set up shop over a downtown greasy spoon in 1958 and rehearsed in a dusty coal cellar, has produced actors and artistic direc- tors known across North America. “And the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, which spent its early days accompanying men's choirs, is en- doying its highest subscription list in ite: 36-year history. ‘“:While some may wonder how Wirtnipeg, stuck on the edge of an often cold and desolate prairie, ever managed to foster and support such cultural groups, the people involved say they actually used the unlikely location to their advantage. » aa “It was a wonderful place fo do something because it was so far away from anywhere and we didn’t get anything very much in the city," said Farrally, who now lives in Kelowna, B.C, “In those days, there wasn’t a symphony, there wasn’t anything except the ballet. We were away from anybody else... and there was. really nothing else to do.” The Royal developing such principal dancers as Evelyn Hart who has been honored at ‘competitions around the world, finished’ its 1992-83 season with a $343,639 surplus. Its subscription list has been rising steadily and now is close to 10,000, Kathleen Richardson, who has been involved with the ballet since — 184, said its inception was part of the city’s unending drive to provide for itself, HAD TO DO IT “When there’s no one at hand, when you can’t go to another town 20 miles away and if you want theatre, you jolly well do it,” she said, “I think that is Winnipeg ~ if we want it, we make it ourselves,” John Hirsch, co-founder of the theatre centre and its first artistic director, says the sense of isolation provided Winnipeggers with ‘an undaunted spirit: ; “T always said that if Winipeggers decided they wanted to grow oranges they would have the foolhardiness and the genius to build greenhouses to grow oranges in the middle of winter,” says’ Hirsch, who. well remembers Winnipeg's notorious winters, “They had tremendous initiative and a love for the arts," says the current artistic director of Ontario’s Stratford Festival. . Hirsch supplied a lot of the early initiative himeelf, : “We had to build everything,” anything available . ready audience,” Hirsch said in an interview in which . Phe exhibit — William uynald, The Prime Ministers — runs for 19 days in Toronto before Moving on to Windsor, Ont., Charlittetown and Calgary — where it is sure to,leave a trail of amused and shaking heads behind. The paintings, says a plaque in the Art Gallery of Ontario, express Ronald's ‘“utuitive response to the individual’s personality in relation to their public presence and acts.” «In other words, the paintings look nothing at ’ all like their subjects. .. Trudeau held up remarkably well on first sight of his portrait, a 3.5- metre mural that could pass-for a detailed piece of work in a New York city subway car. BLUE SNAKES , Serpentine lines of blue Bpray paint facsimilie knock about inside a half- (illed outline of a head, blackened in the core — all upper quadrant and a quasi-religions symbol round out the effect. “Mr. Prime Minister,” called a voice, breaking the silence. “Is it a good likeness?” . “Yes,"" Trudeau replied eccentrically, “from the back.” The prime minister then took a personal tour of the 16 paintings with Ronald, who leaned. on a polished walking stick before each portrait and spoke en- thusiastically to Trudeau while a gaggle of photographers and hangers-on pressed in.
