area of Hooghly; Communist

ed out the sitting member,-a

Hindu Communalist. He -first
won récognition by organizing
the-employees of Lloyd’s Bank,
and then united the separate
bank unions on a _ national
basis.

Months ago, after becoming
general secretary of his union,
he was suspended by Lloyd’s
Bank (Calcutta) for union ac-
tivities, with 39 others.

He fought the election with
contributions “sent “by bank
employees all ‘over India.
Volunteer helpers worked end-
less hours “without food or
rest. :

And often, while wealthy
rivals lavished attention ~ on
their supporters, Kar had not

his helpers... But he won the
seat with a big : majority.

future is Kerala. What hap-
pehs there in ‘the next few
months will affect many other
parts of India; where.the mood
of the people is: Give the Left
a chance,
