Communist Election Manifesto End big business rule Oust the Bennett gov't. n August 30 the people 0 _ of British Columbia have an opportunity to end 20 years of big business rule repre- sented by the Bennett govern- ment. The Bennett government should be ousted: BECAUSE: It has lost thou- sands of jobs by turning over our rich gas, oil, wood, iron ore, copper, coal and other re- sources to U.S. and Japanese corporations for export, instead of establishing manufacturing industries to process them at home. BECAUSE: It has exported thousands of jobs by building Columbia & Libby dams in B.C. to supply water to U.S. hydro power sites serving U.S. indus- tries (at a loss of hundreds of millions of dollars to the B.C. treasury) instead of:developing hydro power right here and creating industries for us. BECAUSE: It has attempted to impose compulsory arbi- tration via the discredited Mediation Commission Act, threatening labor’s hard-won collective bargaining rights. BECAUSE: It has starved education and hospitals by denying them the necessary funds to maintain and upgrade standards. BECAUSE: It has failed to relieve the housing shortage or control escalating rents. BECAUSE: It has done no- thing to force big industries to halt pollution of our environ- ment, nor has it helped the municipalities financially .to install adequate sewage dis- posal systems. BECAUSE: It is stingy with its grants to municipalities, forc- ing homeowners and tenants to bear the load of many services that should be the responsibility of senior governments. BECAUSE: . It allows U.S. corporations to dump their surplus farm produce into B.C., ruining our own farmers. BECAUSE: While cutting welfare to the poor it has done nothing about price fixing and profiteering by the auto-in- surance companies, B.C. Tel., supermarkets and other big busi- ness concerns. The Bennett government has exposed itself as the govern- ment of, by and for the BIG monopolies, and = mainly FOREIGN big monopolies at that. It has become discredited in the eyes of the majority of the people of B.C. In the last election in 1969 it re- ceived only 46% of the total vote (although it secured 70% of the seats due to manipulation of constituency boundaries). This time it should go down to a well- deserved defeat. The people of B.C. are fed up with the Bennett government! They want a change! No return to Tories or Liberals — Elect a progressive majority of NDPers & Communists he Communist Party has consistently advo- cated unity of all the progres- sive forces in this province — the NDP, the Communist Party, trade unions, farm organi- zations, ratepayer, tenant and community, teacher and other professional groups — as the only sure way to oust the Ben- nett government of big busi- ness, and elect a genuine people’s government. For 40 years the CCF and NDP leadership has rejected such unity and followed a ‘‘GO-IT- ALONE”’ policy. And for 40 years its vote has hovered around the 30% mark, never enough to form a government. One of the reasons that the NDP has not made greater gains is that its leaders have equiv- ocated on basic issues. They hesi- tate to take a clear-cut stand for public ownership of big indus- tries and our resources for fear of arousing the antagonism of big business and the mass media it controls. It is afraid to identify itself openly with labor’s struggles and needs, for fear of losing some votes. The NDP has an opportunity, and a responsibility to break with this policy. The whole future of B.C. labor, education, pensioners and municipal ratepayers amongst others depends on it. In this election, ‘‘we unfor- tunately do not yet have the unity of all progressive forces that would guarantee victory. Never- theless every effort must be made to defeat the Social Credit administration and replace it with a government that will put the people first. To elect a majority of Lib- erals or Conservatives would not really change anything fundamentally. They are also the parties of big business. But the election of a majority of NDP’ers and Communists could be the first step to a deci- sive change. We urge you to use your vote to defeat the Bennett government and to elect a majority -of NDP’ers and Communists to the legislature. Why you should vote hen you vote for a Com- munist candidate in this election, your vote signifies to all concerned that a growing section of voters want :— o A clear cut stand on a program of people’s needs. o A clear:cut stand in oppo- sition to big business. o Aclear cut stand against for- eign control of our economy. o An end to the equivocation of those NDP leaders who fail to Communist take a forthright stand on many issues for fear of losing votes by offending big business. o A fundamental change in our society. The Communist Party is the only party in the election that is firmly committed to socialism, to public ownership of our industries and resources and their operation to fulfil the needs of our people rather than providing profits for private corporations. PACIFIC TRIBUNE—FRIDAY, AUGUST 4, 1972—PAGE 8 The election campaign being waged by the Communist Party raises the decisive issues and provides a yardstick by which to measure programs needed to serve B.C. and its people. The election of Communist MLA’s will guarantee that these issued will be raised and debated not only in the Legislature, but brought to the people of every constituency for their opinion and ecision. This sign was carried by one of B.C.’s 70,000 jobless demonstration in 1971. This year the unemployment rolls hav ait another jump to over 75,000. ‘The good life’’ is not for them ort families. The Communist Party will field seven candidates in the pro- vincial election. Funds are urgently needed, and time is short with only 30 days left to August 30 voting day to provide the printed materials necessary to carry the message of the party to the voters. “We are completely dependent on nickels and dimes and dollars of the working people because candidates who are committed to replacement of the hated Sales Tax by increased revenues from the fantastically profit- able oil, gas, wood, and mining industries; candidates com- mitted to repeal of compulsory arbitration, public ownership of B.C. Tel and the auto insurance industry, and increased social expenditures for people’s needs are not going to get anything but abuse from’the big monopolies who contribute to the slush funds ‘of the Socreds, Liberals and Tories,” provincial leader Nigel Morgan said. The party’s election mani- festo and platform and candi- date posters will be off the press by the weekend; plans for news- paper adverts, special leaflets on jobs, resource development, labor and women’s rights and radio spots are well advanced.
