APR | 26 1976 Dear Sir: Re - Mosquito Control, 1976 va On April 9/76 a memorandum was received from Mr. R. Vroom, Personnel Department, B.C. Department of Health, stating that the 1976 Work in Gov- ernment (W.I.G.) Program was cancelled. The immediate consequence of such a cancellation is that the Surveillance and Larviciding segment of the Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam Mosquito Control Program is eliminated. This means that breeding areas normally surveyed and controlled prior to adult mosquito emergence will be left uncontrolled, especially the numerous small pools and stagnant water sources adjacent to and within residential areas. Also, the Ground Fogging portion of the program will be effectively elimin- ated. What this cancellation means to: (1) the community - - reduced service - more mosquitoes - less summer enjoyment - possible health problems - bite reactions, etc. (2) the councils - irate citizens - poor public relations (3) vector control officer ~ less time to spend on other ongoing problems, like rat control, wasp and hornet control, ete. ~ less efficiency in all programs. A possible solution may be to have the councils of Port Coquitlam and Coquitlam pool together funds for a grant to the Union Board of Health, The Union Board of Health would then hire the students to maintain the pro- gram. Estimated costs for wages and benefits for four students for four months is approximately $13,000. The costs for machinery maintenance and mileage are already allowed for in the 1976 Vector Control Budget.
