University for the north INTERIM COUNCIL members of a northern-based ‘university without walls’ met in Prince George re- cently to continue to plan its future. The University of the Arctic, in cooperation with about 30 post-secondary institutions in the US, Bri- tain, Russia, Germany and the Nordic countries, including the University of Northern British Co- lumbia (UNBC) in Prince George, will develop and teach classes on northern issues primarily via the Internet. The meeting in Prince George focused on deve- loping a new bachelor’s degree in circumpolar stu- dies, student and faculty exchange programs, slu- dent services and distance learning programs. As part of the University of the Arctic intiative, UNBC offered a web course on the scography of the circumpolar North last September and is curr- ently developing a web-course in environmental development in the circumpolar North , Nass review starts NOW IS the time to respond to a forests ministry report that will be used to set the rate of logging in the 1.7 million hectare Nass Timber Supply Area. The information report and data package that forms the basis of the Nass timber supply review was released May 4 and can be viewed at the Kalum Forest District offices. Public comment is being accepted up until June 5. A timber supply analysis report will be released for public review later in the year, and that will be followed by the chief forester’s allowable annual cut (AAC) determination. The AAC in the Nass is presently 1,15 million cubic metres per year and was set in 1996. A major factor in setting the new AAC will be the recently ratified Nisga’a Treaty and its effects on the timber supply. Bulldozer stolen _ TERRACE RCMP are looking for the person or persons responsible for stealing a $15,000 bulldo- zer from a Lakelse Lake property April 19-20.-... Officers believe the suspects unlocked a gate at a property north of the Mount Layton Hot Springs -and loaded the 1970 Case 450 bulldozer onto a trailer late Wednesday, April 19 or early Thursday, April 20. Officers are asking anyone who witnessed the robbery from Highway 37. to call.
