TOMORROW, MORE than 2,000 athictes,
along with hundreds of coaches and visitors
will descend upon our city looking for a
little fun and some athletic competition.

Keeping ali those people safe and sound
for three whole days may seem like a
daunting task, but our first aid voluntecrs
say they're up to the task,

‘<We're set up to handle both injured and
ill athietes,’” says games medical director
Brenda Lavalle. ‘A great bunch of people
have worked long and hard to make this all
happen.”

Lavalle is no stranger to her role, She also
served as medical! director: for the 1991

games, so sie was well aware of the =

enormity of her task when she started plan-
ning for this weckend's games more than a

* year a ago.
Lavalle has had to pull together the ser-
‘vices of some 50 level-three first ald at-
tendants, nearly a dozen doctors and 10
physiotherapists for the Games. Those
volunteers together will serve close to 100

shifts at various venues — except Shames
Mountain and the Aqualic Centre, which
have their own first aid people.

But while Lavalle is in charge, she says
organizing first aid was a community event.

“Tt was slow coming, but now that the
Games are closer
response,” she says. “So many people
have offered to help.”

Lavalle says the support of people like
Dave Coverdale, Wayne Moi, Dave Jeph-
son, Ann LeCleir, Mallory Glustein, and
Greg Linton have been instrumental’ in
making the Games safe for everyone.

All medical personnel at the events will
sport ‘identification. sweatshirts, ~10 make
them easy to spot. Plus, they carry commu-
nications gear to call for back-up if neces-
sary.

There’s also a clinic set up at Mill's
Memorial Hospital, so athletic injuries
don’t swamp the emergency room.

“We're ready,” says Lavalle. ‘I think it
