In a district like that in whieh we live, where so much capital is required for the development of great natural resources, the con- dition of the money marketis a matter of considerable importance. That the financial stringency of the last few months has had the effect of deterring progress in the Northern Interior is a regrettable but undeniable fact. Now, however, authorities appear to be united in (he opinion that the financial crisis has passed and that money will soon be readily available for legitimate uses. The price of money in the London market is reflected by, and regulated by the Bank of England rate. find out what the rate is to know if it is easy to obtain’ money. That rate now stands at% per cenj, which, according to the Colo- nist, is an indication that monetary conditions are again normal. Ever since October, 1912, when the Balkan war broke out, and the Bank of England rate rose to 5 per cent, there has been difficulty in borrowing money on the London market. The rate has fluctua- ted since that date. In April, 1918, it want down to 43 per cent, but Oclober last saw it rise again to 5. In the middle .of January it dropped to 44, a week later to 4, and some three weeks ago to 4 er cent. At the same time the French bank rate was reduced from 4 to 84. It had stood at the former figure since October, 1912, The immediate effeet on the London market -of. the reduction of -the Bank of England rate was a rapid rise in the prices of “‘gilt edie’’ securities. Consols rose nearly 5 points, India 3 per cent, 8 points, and Canada 4 per cents 4 5-8 points, New loans commenc- _ ed to come out in shoals and were eagerly taken up by the investing -publie at big premiums. Within a month reputable stocks on the London market showed an increase ‘in value of $250, ou, 000,.
