The approxi- mate proportions are:—metallif- erous minerals, $18,000,000, non- metalliferous minerals $14,000,- 000. In round figures the value of the respective minerals in- cluded may be stated about as follows: gold (placer and lode), $5,800,000; zinc, $800,000; coal and coke, $10,500,000; building material, ete., $3,500,000, As already stated, these are now to he accepted as indicating what the official records may be ex- pected to show when they -shall be available for reference. Placer gold reached the high- est total inthe four years since 1908, Lode gold was within $11, - 000 of the highest total on record in the province, namely, that of 1910. Not so favorable is the comparison of total gold—placer and lode together—for in five previous years was the total of 1912: exceeded, as follows: as againet a total of less than. $5,- 900,000 in 1912, totals of higher years were — 1910, $6, 072,380; 1908 $5,929,880; 19065, $5, 902,402; and 1902, $6,061,409. Silver is higher in value than for any other year since 1906, and in quantity.since 1905. Lead has the highest figures, both quanti- ty and value, In zine, the com- ‘parison is not favorable to last year. Coal shows a value of nearly $600,000 less than in 1910, but it is $1,500,000 higher than the 1911 to'al, and more than $2,000,-|' 000 higher than that of 1909, with earlier years showing a stil] ' gteater disproportion. '. The ¢oke . total'is the highest on. record | as]. to value, but not as to quantity, for in. 1906 the production was |’ 4, 450 tone greater, Taking ; coal |’ and coke together, there was on: | iy one year—1910—when a high er total value was reached, that year having been credited with $321,500 more than was 1912, An ‘Enthusiastic Visitor I, Bernhardt Beale, a Victoria capitalist who was here during the week, thinks highly of Omin- | © eca district. said: “I came to this district with. al . perfectly open mind, having no interests here, and after seeing something of the natural resourc- es of the district I have no hesita- tion in saying that Smithers is, in my opinion, the most. prornis- ing district for investment along the line of the Grand Trunk Pa- cifie. I have spent months in looking over the various parts of British Columbia now being de- veloped by the construction of railways, and have seen ‘nothing that pleased me so well. There is undoubtedly a reat future for the mines of the district, while the agricultural possibilities are immense, The very fact that the areas of arable land are lim- ited in extent as compared with In an interview he the prairies, will tend to increase |’ their value, and making for the| prosperity : of a large popula- tion. When the railway is carrying passengers from thej} east, it will not be long unti)|| there is no vacant land of any account in the Buikley Valley. Many of the people now in the : district are not yet awake to the possibilities—they are living too close to opportunity to appreciate its magnitude,’’ As an evidence of his faith in{|| the future. of the district, Mr. || Beale, before leaving for Vic-j} toria, purchased a parcel of “land |‘ in the vicinity of Smithers, pay-|, ing for ita sum well up in the thousanda., Associated with him in the deal are other capitalists,. and it is understood.
