UN supports Palestine state

UNITED NATIONS — The UN General Assembly called
Dec. 10 for the creation of an independent Palestinian state and
for the withdrawal by Israel of all territories occupied in 1967,
including Jerusalem. :

The resolution asked the Security Council to “recognize the
inalienable rights of the Palestinian Arab people, including the
right to self determination and the right to establish its indepen-
dent Arab state in Palestine’’. The General Assembly vote was
113 to 4 with 23 abstentions. The U.S., Israel, Costa Rica and
Canada voted against.

‘Peaceful Skies for Children’

TOKYO — Thousands of Japanese marched at government
buildings calling for ‘‘Peaceful Skies for Children’’ as they pro-
tested the biggest ever joint U.S.-Japanese military exercises
code-named ‘* Yamasakura-3’’ underway on the northern island
of Hokkaido. The war games were to test the readiness to move
to the island the assault forces of the U.S. Rapid Deployment
Force.

GDR economic growth

BERLIN — The GDR parliament has passed a plan for 1983
calling for a 4.2% economic growth rate. In contrast to the
capitalist recession, the GDR plan means no cuts in social ser-
vices. The country’s 190,000 graduates will be guaranteed jobs in
their professions and labor productivity will rise by 4%. GDR
home construction will increase with one billion marks assigned
to this task next year. In real terms, the real purchasing power of
every citizen will rise by 3%. Today it is calculated GDR citizens
receive two wages — the first being the wages for employment,
the second comprising the value of the vast network of social
services and benefits available to all.

Nuclear free zone campaign

STOCKHOLM — Sweden will be approaching other govern-
ments with the aim of establishing a ‘zone free from tactical
nuclear weapons in Europe’’, Foreign Minister Lennart
Bodstrom announced last week. He said the governments of
NATO and the Warsaw Pact were being contacted as well as such
nations as Finland, Ireland, Yugoslavia, Switzerland and Au-
Stria. Peace forces in norther Europe have long supported such
an initiative.

One year has passed during which the
government, parliament, the Polish
United Workers’ Party and people have
made tremendous efforts to overcome the
social and economic crisis. It took until
August, 1982 for the authorities to stop the
economic backslide and begin to move
forward.

Parliament passed about 50 new laws
and a tireless struggle for the defence of
Poland’s socialist statehood was waged.

In an appraisal of the past year General
Wojiech Jaruzelski made the point that
Poland has ceased being a potential hotbed
of conflicts and now the task is to make the
country once again a durable factor of
international cooperation and stability.

_ He revealed that during the past year
Polish security forces discovered the ex-

tent of collaboration between Western
intelligence agencies and counter-revolu-
tionary forces in Poland. He spoke of the
torrent of economic sanctions against Po-
land imposed by capitalist states and said
the Reagan administration stood as the
main inspirer of the anti-Polish campaign.
He reminded Poles that even as the
parliament was discussing the lifting of
martial law, Reagan renewed his sanc-
tions.

Reagan’s terms, Jaruzelski said, were
the same in essence as those put by Soli-
darity extremists one year ago. He re-
minded Reagan that Poland’s destiny will
be decided on the Oder and Vistula, not on
the Potomac.

Reports from Poland show that suspen-
sion of martial law does not mean lessen-
ing vigilance. Official data reveals that
authorities seized more than 1,000 small
arms and sizeable quantities of explosives.

groups,
360 underground print shops and 11 radio’

stations — all financed by outside organ-
and its European partners.

It is important to note that the condi-
tions which make possible a lifting of mar-
tial law have been created within one year
despite instigations from abroad, boycotts
and attempts by extremists to stage sense-
less acts of provocation.

As Jaruzelski told the nation, the pat-
riotic spirit of the Polish people, their wis-
dom and the positions of the working class
largely explain why calls by the enemy
have found no response.

“The year drawing to a close,’’ he said,
“shows once again the importance of our
alliances and the significant assistance we
have received from our Soviet friends and
the strength and staunchness of the so-
cialist community ...’”
