YCL booth at PNE

A dark horse feature of attrac-
tion at this years Pacific National
Exhibition is the Young Com-
munist League booth. This opin-
ion was reached by this reporter
after an opening day tour of the
grounds.

Situated inthe Specialty Arcade
of the Show Mart Building, the
booth is being viewed by thous-
ands each day and nearly every-
one of those thousands comments
to themselves or their friends
as they pass by.

Comments range from horri-
fied shock to pleasant surprise
and curiosity and large numbers
of young people seem to be
irresistably drawn toward the
booth.

Inside the booth members of
the Young Communist League
debate and discuss with all com-
ers. Sometimes the air gets a
little warm and crowds of thirty
and up are common.

Communist radio

program to start

«The Communist Party On the
Air” will begin again Sunday
September 13th at 6.55 p.m. on
radio station C.K.W.X. 1130 on
your radio dial.

The popular program, which
ran for nine weeks last spring
on C.K.L.G. is sponsored by the
Vancouver Committee of the Par-

It is a self supporting broad-
cast and is sustained from con-
‘tributions from listeners. In an-
nouncing the new series the Com-
munist Party appealed to listen-
ers to contribute towards the cost
of the series as well as their
ideas.

A special $1000 fund is being
established and contributions will
be acknowledged publicly.

Through all of this the YCL’ers
keep a happy face and carry on
friendly discussions. One Am-
erican visitor even went so far
as to ask whether the YCL’ers
good humour was a phycological
weapon. “If so,” he said, “it
works,”

A spokesman for the League
told this reporter that one of
the first visitors had donated
five dollars and that such dona-
tions were happily received to
cover the cost of the booth and
help the League carry on its

work.

The same spokesman evaluat-
ed the reception of the public
by pointing out that members
of the League who had been a
little nervous about staffing the
booth now couldn’t be kept out.
Some had come down to take
a look and stayed the rest of
the day. Others didn’t want to go
home when their shift ended.

When closing time came the
Commisionaire hadto come along
and ask people to leave. Discuss-
ion and debate had to end — but
only for the day.

The fight against fascism and
for working class unity were the
twin hallmarks of Palmiro To-
gliatti’s life and work as a world
Communist leader andas general
secretary of the Italian Com-
munist Party for nearly 40 years.

Italy was the first country to
fall to fascism. In 1922 Musso-
liniis march on Rome began a
reign of terror against the work-
ing class movement.

If the Italian working class
movement with the Communist
Party at its head was able to sur-
vive through those dark years
from 1922 to 1944 and then to
make the magnificent advance
that it has in the 20 years since
then, it is in no small measure

He was born in Genoa on March
25, 1893. As it was Palm Sunday,
he was christened Palmiro...,At
18, he won a scholarship to the
University of Turin where he took
his degree in law. There he met
Antonio Gramsci, with whom he
later founded the Italian Com-
munist Party.

At the Socialist Party Congress
in Leghorn in January, 1921, the
Italian Communist Party was

central committee and the year
after was named editor of its
first paper.

He had the first of many hair-
breadth escapes from death when
a fascist squad broke into the
offices of the paper after Musso-
lini?s march. But Togliatti es-
caped and with Gramsci led the
party in the difficult conditions
of illegality, while thousands
were being arrested, tortured
and murdered by Mussolini’s fa-
scist thugs.

Togliatti escaped abroad, and.
apart from continuing to lead
the underground struggle in Italy,
he played anincreasingly import-
ant part in the work of the Com-
smunist International.

As a leading member of the
International he made an out-
standing contribution to a tho-
rough analysis of the nature of
fascism and, on the basis-of this
analysis, to the creation of a un-
ited front to bar the road to the
advance of fascism in Europe.

During the war the underground
struggle continued, and when he™
returned to a partially liberated
Italy in 1944 it was the work of |
the Italian Communists, under
Togliatti’s leadership, that made
it possible for the Italian people
to sweep away the vestiges of
