Guidelines

Height

Most of downtowns commercial buildings are two stories in
height. The recommended maximum height is 12 metres (40 feet).
Where additional height will not interfere vith the streetscape
or obstruct light to neighbours Special consideration will be

given to taller buildings.

Proportion and Shape
The proportions of most of downtown buildings are long and
low. New buildings are expected to follow this same Proportion,

because of lot shapes and size,

Wall Surfaces

There are a variety of finishing materials used for walls
downtown. Consequently, there is no set, recommended material.
New buildings should use similar or complementary materials to

Surrounding buildings.

Windows

The predominant window size and shape is a full size shop
front display window. Due to energy conservation Standards, new
buildings will have to use multiple glazing and reduce window area.
The reduction of window size should follow the building Proportion

and shape,

Doors
There are doors about every 15 metres (50 feet) into stores

downtown. This frequency of doors should be maintained to avoid

dead spaces of no activity.

Colour
The predominance hue and colours downtown are light earth

tones, building renovations and new construction is expected to

follow this practice,
