2362 Whyte Avenns, Port Coguitlem, B.C. V3G 2h4 October 19th, 1978 cum GOUNC City Cierk City. of Port Coquitlam, | OCT 23 1978 . 2272 MeAllister Avenue; Port Coquitian, B.C. Dear Mr. Freeman: This letter is to officially register our opposition te City Council's approva} in principal to construct a 'ring rosd' along the cast bank of the Coquitlam River from Marpole Avenue to McAllister. -Surely members of council are not unaware of the green belt treasure that lies on their doorstep that would be lost by turning a potential recreation and leisure area into a blacktop jungle. We can well recall the policy of previous councils to preserve both the Coquitlam River and adjacent land for recreation and leisure purposes. A true example of recreation potential may be seen by visiting the Idons Fark; well planned and maintained and enjoyed both by local residents and visitors to our city. A gradual extension of this has been an expectation of many. . What has happened to, and what does the future hold for the Poco Trail, a project well received and enjoyed by psople of all ages? Is this to become a thing of the past? A look et the dollars spent by the G.V.R.D. to acquire park Jand makes one wonder how our Mayor, who is also Chairman of the Regional District, would even consider the loss of any portion of the river and adjacent areas that hold the key to future civic development of nature trails, leisure and recreation facilitiss. ; It was noted on television that the proposed road waa initiated by council, not by any person or group. Apparently the main purpose is to take traffic off Shaughnessy Street, only to have it re-enter a few blocks away. If there is a traffic problem now, no doubt it will became a traffic problem hazard when one looks at the location of the fire hall. Dees thia not warrant another long and serious look at the over= all traffic planning before being labelled a top priority?
