The owner of Northwest - Coast Cedar Products operates a small loft-style shingle mill behind his Kalum Lake Drive property, His mill, which silts surroun- ded by stacks of wand blocks and perfectly aligned palates of cedar shingles, employs four full-time staff, not including himself. Except for a couple months off during the coldest winter months, the mill has been run- ning consistently six days a week from August 1999 produ- cing about a palate and a half of shingles every day. | He buys blocks of cedar from independent loggers, turns them into certified shakes and shingles and bundles and ships them to a distributor in Surrey. From there, the shingles are sold to stores in Eastern Cana- da and the United States. Stein and his family moved to Terrace in June from the Queen Charlotte Islands, where he helped set up a similar mill. “It’s a central location and I saw a bit of an opening for this kind of business,” said Stein.
