The man of many careers THIS WEEK 1] would like ta -. $haré a story with you about Carl Alphonse Langlols — a man ‘with a very interesting back- ground. ‘Carl: is one of seven brothers who served overseas during the -. Second...World .War and. all _ felurned safely. He. was one of approximately 3,000 workers who came to Kilimat in 1952 at Alcan’s begin- hing. He was born Jan. 6, 1916 at Selkirk, Manitoba, the son of Peter and Jessie Ann Langlois. Jessie Ann’s father — John A. McDonald’ — was from the highlands of Scotland and came from the famous McDonald clan. He and cight other adventurous and aggressive Scoll'sh boys stole a small two-masted keich and sailed across the Atlantic ta Nova Scotia.. McDonald first worked for the Hudson Bay Company and then later settled at Selkirk, where Jessie Ann was born. Their three children = — daughters Jessic and Kate and son Jock — grew up in Selkirk. ‘Jessie Ann went to work as a “chambermaid at the Merchant Hotel, where fishermen used’ to come and stay in the fall. Tl was there she met her hus- band Peter Langlois, who was a fisherman, . Peter worked with the Depart- ment of Public Works and as a fisherman. Jessie Ann and Peter Langlois were marted in Selkirk in 1912 and they had 15 children ‘who jived.”’ Carl grew up in Manitoba, first - at Selkirk then later at Big Island on Lake Winnipeg. He fished and then in 1934 four of the Langlois brothers left home and walked 32 miles across Lake Winnipeg to Manigotoyen and worked at logging camps for one dollar a day. They progressed to sawmills and later gold mining towns in northern Ontario. When they weren't working, they trapped and prospected in Manitoba. . . They. travelled by canoe in the .. simmer, by Snowshoe in the winter, and lived two and a half years in the wilderness, ‘ When the Second World War came, Carl joined the Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry. It was his second try at gelling into the forces. The first time he wasn't accepted and went out “shooting squirrel”’ for $1 a pelt, Carl arrived in Glasgow in 1940 on the Empress of Austria, He served overseas until 1945 as a cook for an officers’ mess. Six other Langlois brothers served in that war: Cyril Peter, who became regimental Sgt. Major in the 10th Armoured Tank Regiment; Edivin George, of the West Esscs Scottish Regiment, faken prisoner 12 hours after landing in Normandy; Edward Joseph, an RCAF mechanic for one of the bombing squadrons that raided Germany nightly through the war; Elmer John, of the Calgary Tank Corp,. landed with 7,000 other Canadians at Dieppe and was the only tank to return from the bungled raid, be- cause they spenl seven days in their tank upside down and had been thought dead; William Henry, of the Royal Canadian Artillery, supported the First Ca- nadian Corps in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and into Germany; Arthur Hartley, went overseas late in 1943 with the Royal Canadian Navy on escort duty with ships hauling war sup- plies to Murmansk. Three other brothers served in the military or as peacekeepers after the war, And sister Jean Adeline became a nurses aid during WW2, work- ing at (he Major Hospital in Win- nipeg. Seven of the 15 Langlois chil- dren are still living today — all of whom served Canada with great pride. When Carl returned to Win- nipeg, he worked for Manitoba GoodRoads road construction and.” rose ta superintendent. In 1951, Carl met and married his wife, Vi, in Selkirk. IN the spring of that year Carl came to B,C. and worked at any job available in Vancouver. _ While there, he got a job as a labourer for Kitimat Constructors. Carl left’ Kitimat.in 1953 and returned to Vancouver. .°: He went back into mining ex- ploration and was employed by different mining companies until 1972, Then he joined the B.C. Corps of Commissionaires, a veteran or- ganizalion, and served with them as a security officer until retiring in 1981. . Now Carl and Vi live in Ter- race.
