There were over 180 bananas eaten by !9 par- ticipants. The Terrace Judo and Ju-Jitsu. Club sponsored the event for the purpose of raising finances. ‘‘A national tournament will be held in Winnipeg, Manitoba next year and we're trying to raise some funds for our travelling expenses’, said technical director, Shane Palahicky. Approximately $200 was raised during this event, but mofée..money is needed for the par- ticipants to be able to compete. Palahicky said the ei | children did a lot of runn- ing after eating an average of 10 bananas each. ‘‘It was a lot of fun for every- one,’’ said’ Palahicky. _ TERRACE —‘'There are natural accidents in ski- ing, but in many cases, skiers cause most of their own problems,”’ says local chiropractor Dale Green- wood. ‘‘Half the injuries I see result from faulty equip- ment and the other half from lack of training or poor physical condition,” says Greenwood. He added that pre- season conditioning is the skier’s first defence against injury, and to help out, Greenwood has put together a Code of Cau- tion for this season’s skiers: @ Stretching and warm- up is a must before any physical exercise. The muscles must be warm, soft and pliable, allowing joints a full range of mo- tion. @ Then it is important to increase muscle strength. @ This is best done with repetitive weight lifting. If you aren’t experienced, go to a gym that can provide professional advice specific to pre-ski condi- tioning. — @ They should start you with low weights and then progress slowly. @ The shocks that come from skiing on varying Terrace Review — Wednesday, December 31, 1986 "7 terrain all hit the lower body first. Ideally these should be absorbed in hips and knees equally, so the upper body can remain stabilized. @ The main muscles to work on are quadriceps and hamstrings, hip flex- ors and gluteals. @ Stretching and strengthening these muscles will provide pro- tection for joints and bones that will have to take a lot of stress through the winter. After conditioning, any skier’s best self-defence is in proper equipment. The Safety on the slopes two key elements here are ski bindings set to release at the right moment, and clothing that will keep you warm and dry. If you aren’t expert, get instruction, Greenwood warns, And when you’re on the. slopes, learn your limita- tions. Eat food that will give you energy for the day, and if you’re tired, don’t go for that one last run. It might be your last for the season.
