A12 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, August 28, 1996 TERRACE STANDARD ~ Business REvVIEw Locals rack up mega-Miles LOCAL PARTICIPANTS in a reward program for air- line tickets or other services collect more than those living in similar size areas. Local collectors have, on average, 1,176 Air Miles on their accounts compared to 853 Air Miles for those living in Prince Rupert and 780 Air Miles for those living in Cranbrook. And there are twice as many redemptions for ser- vices in this area than Prince Rupert or in Cranbrook. The number of total trans- actions to date is also high here compared to the other places. Terrace collectors have used their cards 1.4 million times compared to 780,000 times in Cranbrook and 873,000 times in Prince Rupert. Air Miles officials say the relative isolation of Terrace and area compared to other Terrace a hot spot for the Air Miles program “There are enough Air Miles in Terrace to fly 1,800 people to Hawail — that's the equivalent of four jumbo jets.” places may act as an incen- tive for people to sign on to the program and then partic- ipate in a big way. “There are 8,500 collec- tors in Terrace {and area) out of a population of 19,500,”” says John Wright, the vice president of Loyalty Management Group which runs the Air Miles program, ‘That's pretty good,” he added. Prince Rupert has 6,500 collectors while Cranbrook rings in at 6,233, Terrace and area also ranks high with 87 per cent of collectors signed up using their cards regularly, In more dramatic terms, roulliplying the number of collectors here by the aver- age number of Air Miles on each catd comes to 10.2 million Air Miles in this atea. “There are enough Air Miles in Terrace to fly 1,800 people to Hawaii — that’s the equivalent of four jumbo jets,”” says Wright. Wright says British Columbia stands out in the nalion as an active Air Miles region with approxi- mately 990,000 people signed up. ““Western Canada is very active as a whole and B.C, is one of our better markets -— right behind Alberta,” he said. All told, there are 4.3 mil- lion households in Canada which have Air Miles cards. Businesses buying into programs such as Air Miles do so in the expectation their revenucs will increase as people seck to gain a benclit in return. Wright says that’s been the case with the loca] Reit- man’s siore here as more than 13 per cent of active collectors have shopped at the outlet since it signed on to the Air Miles pragram in February.
