B12 Terrace Review — Wednesday, June 26, 1991 Stormy’s Notes py 6. Norman Your guide to live music in Terrace ~ Blue skles, green grase and harmony drew about 100 relaxed listeners to the first Concert in the Park event of the summer recently. The Terrace Community Band and other local musicians set up in the band shell in George Little Park for an afternoon of live entertainment. — On the Small Screen Video reviews by Harriett Fjaagesund Goodfellas Starring Ray Liotta, Robert DeNiro, Paul Sorvino, Joe Pesco. Produced by Irwin Winkler. Directed by Martin Scorsese. Rating: R. Running time: 146 minutes. oo. ~ Even as a little boy, Henry Hill (Liotta) wanted to be a gangster. The son of an Irish father and an Italian mother, Henry just knew that being a gangster meant you were somebody on a street full of nobody's. He started by parking cars for kingpins like Paul Cicero (Sorvino), Tommy DeVito (Pesci), and Jimmy "The Gent" Conway (DeNiro). He had his foot in the door and he meant to keep it there. The mob became his family, the centre of his universe, and he moved up through the ranks with lightning speed. Henry loved the thrill and excitement of the heists they pulled off, the late-night high stakes poker games in back rooms, the endless flow of women, booze and money. He didn’t have to kill anybody —- there were others more than willing to spill blood when the big boss ordered it — so every- thing was coming up roses for good old Henry. . _ Then he broke the cardinal rule; he started running drugs behind the boss’s back. First he got caught by the cops, which was okay because he was pretty sure he could beat the rap, but what good old Henry was really worried about was his family, his pals. Henry knew he was a walk- ing dead man. Give this movie a try, even if you don’t like gangster movies. It’s completely different, and well worth the price of admission. . White Fang ' Starring Ethan Hawke, Kiaus ' Maria Brandauer, Jed. Produced - by Marykay Powell, Directed by Randal Keiser. Rating: PG. Running time: 109 minutes. Jack Conroy knows there’s gold in the Yukon. Just before his father’s death, Scott Conroy sent his son a packet of gold dust and a letter detailing the exact where- abouts of his claim, Now Jack is on the high road to adventure to fulfill his father’s dying wish — to strike it rich in the gold fields! Only one things stands in Jack’s way; he’s as green as grass when it comes to facing the challenges of the treacherous Yukon valley. But what he lacks in experience he makes up for in sheer tenacity. He finally convinces Alex Larson (Brandauer), a veteran miner, into guiding him to his father’s claim. ‘Severe weather, attacks by starving wolves, men made crazy by the lure of gold, Jack and Alex survive it all, and forge a . lasting friendship in the process. Then Jack unexpectedly finds another friend when he is attacked by a savage grizzly; a half-wild wolf-dog named White . Fang (Jed). This movie was made with the cooperation of the American Humane Society. A lot of people were out and about, looking and listening to the sounds around Terrace. ‘The night of June 15 was a real treat for those of us who attended the dance the Thornhill Community Hall. Two local bands graced the stage for this well-attended event. First up was Gang of Four, who surprised me with a smooth, hot sound. They have been together for only the past four months, but the delivery was a true indulgence for the musically-minded. I really enjoyed this band. Out: front with a lively vocal show was Todd Bellamy. Tony Demelo kept the pace with solid drumming, along with Steve Holmberg on guitar and some throbbing bass from Dan Carson. All the band’s members are from Terrace and area. Another Terrace-based foursome, Diamond Back, took the stage for the second set. Members are Doug Sharples (bass), Brian Wilson (drums), Corey Funk (guitar) and Harold Armstrong on vocals. They play anything, from country to heavy metal, but it seemed they were having a bit of an off night. Not that the dancers would have agreed — the were out on the floor for most of the evening! Congratulations go to sound man Murray Olivier, who did an admirable job of keeping the equilibrium. The following day, Sunday afternoon, the band shell was the place to be for a look-and-listen to the Terrace Concert Society's first "concert In the park" this season. The informal gathering of multi-aged classical musicians played for a group of about 100 spectators. The event took a lot of organization, and it-was well worth the effort. I look forward to hearing more... Every second Sunday of the month The Creperie restaurant on Tetrault St. offers a coffee house from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., operated by the Program for Independent Living. All local musicians are welcome to come down for the jam. Bands who would like to play are asked to contact the Creperie in advance. Country-rock duo Loose Change is loose this week and next week in George’s Pub at the Northem Motor Inn. The Northern also offers a "musicians’ jam" from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday nights. Gigi’s in the Terrace Inn is introducing The Late Show this week, a Top 40 band. Until next time... \ ANA “Watch your pocketbook. Someone may try to pick it.
