According to Alcan Design Homes’ president J. C. Neely, these prototype Universal Homes are the result of two years of re- search and development by Alcan to provide an attractive, comfort- able home of high quality at a rice which has vanished from the anadian scene in recent years. Until plans as to subsequent manufacture and distribution are complete, the protetype homes are located in a private research area and are not open for public ‘view- ing. Although Dr, Daoust remains in Montreal, he is teaching physical chemistry to some 80 university graduates in Arvida with the aid of modern electronic communica- tions equipment, The students, all graduates in chemistry, engineering, mathemat- ics and physics, are employed in the huge Aluminum Company of Canada, Lid. plant or in research in Aluminum Laboratories Limit. ed in Arvida. Professor Dadust sits in an ‘of- fice in Montreal and writes black- board material on a telescript machine which transmits the image by telephong line to Arvida where il is projected onto a large screen in the classroom. He speaks -through a combination speaker- phone and microphone unit linked to loudspeakers in the class. Stu- dents communicate with him by telephones scattered through the lecture hall. Alcan is the first Canadian com- pany to employ this system for a full-scale lecture series, although it has been used previously for single lectures by industry and educational institutions. The equipment is owned and maintained by Bell Canada. ‘Professor Daoust put in a full day at Universite De Montreal then “meets” his class at Arvida. Three times in the course of the serles he goes to Arvida for clas ses, and establishes a personal re- lationship with the students. Despite some initial difficulties while the Professor and students become familiar with the equip- ment, the students in Arvida are enthusiastic over this new means of keeping educationally up-ta- date. Dr. Daoust considers it a very useful advance in the tech- niques of education. Amongst additional points made by Mr. Neely during a press pre- view of the Homes was that alum- inum, mainly in the form of sid- ing, windows, Soffit and Fascia was used only where it was the most logical material and that home builders throughout Canada would benefit from the introduc- tion of the Alcan Universal Home because it would serve to expand the total Canadian housing mark- et.” Alean has under consideration plans to build assembly plants for The “Homes Canada and if the Company proceeds, Initial produc- tion is expected by the fall of Ap pointments .. .
