the picture presented by the so called "ecologists" locally, is somewhat over-played
and exaggerated, For example, there is resistance by two species of mosquito in one
valley in California, By resistance, I mean that the recomended application is not
as effective on the mosquito as would be expected. Mr. Raley stated that one of the
reasons for this problem was the uncoordinated programe throughout California (too
many people using to many methods). He algo emphasized,together with Dr, Murray,
Treasurer, AMCA, that the major source of this problem lies with the farmers in this
-., county who do not irrigate properly (ie, there is an unnecessary flooding or over=

. droigation of their pasture lands), They are now citing the offending individuals

and ordering correction of the problem,

In California they are able to control these resistant strains of mosquito

_ (in addition te ridding the fields of the excess water) through the use of Flit MLO,

_which is an pesticide that is mechanical in its action. The problem however, lies
in the fact that the watevs in which these mosquito breed are constantly changing

‘and so diversifed,

All in all, the meeting was a good one as it enabled those of us from British
Columbia to note the problems that are occurring to the south of us and to determina
how we compared to their programs. I must say that over the past five years we

--- have gained considerable ground and are now comparable to our counter parts, However,
"Our. research programs, if they do indeed exist, are so far behind, that unless

greater governmental backing is received, we in Canada will not even be in the same

ballpark, let alone game,
