Half the dosage of budworm spray VICTORIA (CP) — The British Columbia govern- ment’s controversial budworm spraying program in the Fraser Canyon will be only half as big as originally anticipated, Forests Min- ister Tom Waterland said Tuesday. Waterland told a news conference the B.C. Forest Service will organize the raying of 52,000 acres on e east side of the Fraser River between Yale and’ Boston Bar. The government's original plan to spray about 100,000 acres with in- secticides met with stringent opposition from environmentalists and residents of the Fraser Canyon. As a resuit of the ob- jections, Waterland met with various experts April 23 and 29 to discuss the problem. The plan now is to spray 30,-000 pounds of Sevin-4-oil, and 20,000 pounds of Orthene’ ‘in an area which is ac- cessible by three industrial roads, Waterland said, adding that access to the spraying area is therefore easily controlled. The government will also follow a recommendation by the royal commission on herbicides and pesticides by not spraying within three miles of any populated area. The minister said the total cost of the program, ex- pected to take between 10 and 14days to complete, will be $400,000. He said the government has set aside $100,000 more to monitor the results of the spraying. Waterland said although a telegram Tuesday from the B.C. Medical Association asked the government to “cancel the program en- tirely, the association was satisfied with the new program. l rivers in the spray area drain into the Fraser River, he said, but any chemicals which flow into the Fraser will be so dilutec that they won’t be detec table. The east side of the spray area is Protected by a mountain ridge which would help keep any chemicals from entering the canyon HELP WANTED THE CANADIAN ARMED FORCES Have Openings For Young Canadians 17 to 24 years old who are Interested in: - learning a trade 7 - free medical-dental - - excellent pension benefits - good pay opportunities A Military Career, Counsellor will be in Terrace at Canada Manpower on Wednesday, May 18 from 9:00 A.M. to oe CO-OP HA RE RE RR RR A EE IR ERE I I Rs I aT aS MORE TO OFFER EE fa RE Re: Wed., Thur., Fri, Sat, May 11-42-13-14 uf pi = 7™~ nti AAA Bene SK a | w 14 rae ES Sia. rte A ale ay pict ao Tune , Light Chunk Co-op. 6% fl. oz. tins — oe tt ROBES +L, ‘we Pip sa ‘Bathroom Tissue, 8 Delsey, eo ¢ Asst‘d.
