In fairness to Trudeau he has
not yet repeated Nixon’s block-
busting lie that profits are at “a
very low level now.”

Ominous pressures are mount-
ing for the introduction of a
wage freeze in Canada.

There is no doubt that Nixon’s
Phase One that ends Nov. 13
will see a Phase Two of much
longer duration for the freezing
of workers’ incomes in the USA.

they’re for an incomes policy
providing it’s applied equitably
... on banker and worker alike!

Donald MacDonald, president
of the Canadian Labor Congress,
has held firm so far in his forth-
right rejection of wage controls
in any form. He bases himself in
what he knows is the militant
position of Canadian organized
workers on that score.

In his Labor Day message,
MacDonald warned against gov-
ernment. interference in labor
disputes. Choosing his words,
the CLC president said efforts
are called for to improve collec-
tive bargaining “rather than re-
placing it with some rigid legal
system.” He could have warned
that should Trudeau and Co. at-
tempt to introduce a wage freeze
it would very probably be ac-
companied by no-strike legisla-
tion as Nixon has done in the
United States.

There are $2.5 billions of
Canadian goods now affected by
the Nixon 10% surtax and tens
of thousands of Canadian jobs.

The $80 million fund Trudeau
plans to use to help Canadian
industry—his government calls
it an “act to support employ-
ment” —-will in great part be
spent to pay American-owned
companies in our country with
Canadian dollars to continue
making profits here and ship-
ping them back to the USA, to
bolster Nixon’s economic as-
sault! .

Labor should tell the Trudeau
government to stop exerting its
efforts in Parliament on behalf
of monopoly, to heed the de-
mands of the working people.
To unite in order to strengthen
these demands we also need a
Parliament of Labor—an all-
Canada conference of organized
Workers and people’s democra-
tic organizations — that the
Canadian Labor Congress
should convene. :

And the slogans for it should
echo the Labor Day call of the
Communist Party of Canada:
“Unite in Defense of Jobs,
Wages and Independence! A Job
or Adequate Income for Every
Canadian as a Right!”
