7 DID YOU KNOW CON'T New Erom Statistics Canada: -- Enrolments in French and English Programmes HIGHLIGHTS IN SCHOOL YEAR 1978-70: OUTSIDE QUEBEC - Over 1.5 million students studied French as a second language - Forty-four per cent of elementary students studied French as a second compared to 28% in 1970~71 - Approximately 41% of secondary students studied French as a second language, down from 56% in 1970-71 but stable since 1974-75 - Over 168,000 students (104,000 elementary, 65,000 secondary) were enrolled in programs designed for French-speaking students (excludes Alberta ) * - 26,000 students were enrolled in French immersion programs, an increase of 29 % over 1977-78 (excludes Alberta) * - 281 schools offered immersion programs, up from 237 in 1977-78 (excludes Alberta)* IN QUEBEC . . ~ Approximately 17% of students received their education in English - Nearly all of French secondary students study English as a second language * No distinction is made by Alberta between programs designed for Franc- ophones and French immersion programs for Anglophones. However, CPF- Alberta has identified 75 schools in 22 school boards offering educa- tion in French for a significant portion of each day in 1979-80.
