V3C 2A8 Dear Mayor Traboulay and Council: The Board of the Powell River Regional District at its regular meeting of August 24, 1989 endorsed the attached motion to Provincial Cabinet requesting a moratorium on inappropriate commercial logging on private land in the Islands Trust area. The Board would ask for your consideration and support of this motion.” ete ee ee ee ee ee on ee cee wee —— see . vies ed ee es 7 ot As you may be aware Lasqueti Island falls both within the jurisdiction of the Islands Trust for planning services and the Powell River Regional District, “(Electoral Area-E) for-community services. The Lasqueti situation serves to highlight the serious nature of the problem of logging practices on private land not only in the Islands Trust area but: throughout the province. It is time the Provincial Government acknowledged there are inappropriate logging practices being used on private land and set in motion legislation to address this issue. We believe the Island’s Trust should be given the means ‘to controi—and-regulate-forestry—practiees- on-private—land—as—a—test-.case. -for.--- future legislation for the province. This seems appropriate due to the Islands Trust’s mandate to preserve and protect the unique nature of the Gulf Islands. ) As further background on this request, we have attached a brief from the Lasqueti Island Steering Committee entitled "Towards Sustainable Forestry on Private Land in the Islands Trust Area". Our Regional Board would encourage you to forward resolutions expressing your Boards support for a temporary moratorium (until legislation is enacted) to the Premier, Ministry of Municipal Affairs, and Ministry responsible for Environment. Your support of this proposal will provide further impetus to the Provincial Government’s plan to give more local control to communities ever their resource based iswuues.
