Compensation for student loss schools get $178,000 .COAST MOUNTAIN SCHOOL District will receive compensation for its decline in student enroll- ment, but only half as much: as it had hoped for, says school board chair Linda Campbell. The district had wanted more than $300,000 to make up for what it would lose in provincial grants for having 97 students less than anticipated, But it instead received $178,000 from the educa- tion ministry to help protect . Student services. First estimates out the stu- dent drop at nearly 130, but 30 more students have now entolled at the alternate school. After months of waiting, Campbell said the district was thankful, but dis- appointed, to finally hear what it would get. ‘“Am [ happy about the amount?’’. Campbell asked, ““No’, but every little bit helps. * She said the district’s : budget deficit is close to $1.5 million. Attorney” General Ujjal -Dosanjh and Priddy are al- - leging that Imperial Tobac- co Ltd., Rothmans, Benson & Hedges Inc. and RJR- Macdonald Inc. knew of the _ addictive nature and the dangerous health effects of tobacco use and tried to conceal those risks to con- sumers, “Tobacco companies should be held accountable for the devastating effects of their harmful products,’’ said Dosanjh. According to Priddy, B.C. taxpayers have been shouldering the health care costs of illnesses caused by cigarettes, and that burden should be placed on the to- bacco companies. The government's state- ment of claim alleges that cigarettes are a dangerous addictive product which, when used exactly as in- tended, cause illness and death in fifty per cent of regular smokers. Priddy has invited all provincial and territorial ministers of health and the federal minister Allan Rock to Vancouver Dec. 2 to 4 for the Works Health organiza- tions’s first meeting to draft an International strategy against tobacco, “The WHO wiped ont smallpox in this century,’’ Penny said, ‘‘Let’s hope they can eliminate smoking in the next.”’ Nation-wide it is estimated that $5 billion a year is spend treating tobac- co related illnesses. Tobacco kills nearly 6,000 British Columbians cach year. Lawsuits against tobacco companies in the United States have been very suc- cessful, and has brought the U.S. to the verge of very significant change in how the tobacco industry does business and, ultimately how young people are pro- tected, Last. week, American to- bacco companics agreed to a settlement of $250 billion Tesource centre to save $100,000 to help balance its budget. Campbell said the tesource centre should be closed by this February. Terrace teachers aren’t- happy about the decision, since their resource material will now be spread among various schools in the dis- trict. It will be a harder to find and to keep track of where it is kept. Campbell admitted the closure ‘may make things tougher for teachers, but in the big scheme everyone will be affected by the cuts in some way. More cuts to retire the :deficit will be determined at the next school board meet- ing Dec, 2. in Terrace. kkekik Skeena NDP MLA Hel- mut Giesbrecht said the $2.5 million granted last week to ENDS» SATURDAY!
