CALL IT a case of alphabet soup for the next litthe while when it comes to watching cablevision, A series of events in the United Slates carlier this ycar and recent decisions of the Canadian Radio- telecommunication Communica- tions Commission (CRTC), the federal body which regulates TV, have resulted in changes, It’s going to affect watchers of the American Public Broadcast- ing System (PBS) and those who watch country and western video Stations, . particularly Country Music Television (CMT), It. began when CBS lost the rights to carry the National Foot- ball Conference (NFC) of the Na- tional Football League (NFL). ' Those rights when to an up and coming American television network called FOX. This left Skeena Cablevision and other. cable companies in Canada without a station carrying the NFC. This: lead Skeena Cablevision on a search for a FOX station. Skeena Cablevision now has a FOX slation, WUHF, from Rochester, New York. Its on Channet 14, Al the same time, Skeena Cablevision now has a new CBS signal, WTOL, from Toledo, Ohio, It replaces WJBK from De- troit that switched from CBS to FOX, . WTOL is on Channel 8, the same channel on which WJBK was broadcast. Skeena Cablevision is carrying the new CBS station on its basic service and FOX on its extended basic service — channels above 12 on the dial — because of _CRTC iules, says manager Kevin Barnard. Thal’s because the CRITIC doesn’t permit FOX stations ta be carticd on the basic service, he said, But there are more changes coming Jan.'1 and that affects PBS and CMT. Earlier this year the CRTC ap- proved a new batch of specialty . Canadian channels. One of those ’ is the New,Country Network. -With those changes, the CRTC told cable opcrators they could no longer carry the Amcrican CMT because they already carry anoth- er American country and western channel, The Nashville Network (TNN). ‘So Skeena Cablevision is going to pick up the New Country Network and drop CMT, Ws also adding another Cana- dian channel, The Weather Network, in response to requests mainly from Kitimat and Prince Rupert. Planes need lights AVIATION SAFETY is another reason for continuing to staff 35 lighthouses on the B.C. coast, Skcena MP Mike Scott told hear- ings in Kitimat Sunday, Scott said the federal govern- ment’s plan to automate lighthouses on the coast would eliminate a whole range of extra services provided by lighthouse keepers, “They provide a great deal of services over and above keeping a light revolving at the top of a tower,’’ Scott says, ‘‘Anyone out on the water recognizes that,” Floatplane pilots depend on visual observations from lighthouse keepers to give them extta information about landing conditions, Automating the lighthouses will narrow the margin of safety for pilots flying into remote areas, Scott said. Transport Canada spends $4.9 million a year operating the 35 lighthouses. Scott says the government has not yct disclosed how much it would cost to maintain automated lighthouses or what the saving would be. “$4.9 million is a modest cost compared to safety of marine traffic, compared to the safety of aviation traffic.’’ [73 PREPARED PREPARING FDA LITE iS WHAT WE'RE ALL ABOUT A10 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, December 7, 1994 Cable TV gets tricky DOORS BY STEEL-CRAFT sFull 2" Thick 24 Gauge Design ‘Embossed Woodgrain Design For Added Beauty ‘Factory Electrostalically Prime-Painted Steel Doors «Computer Balanced Easy To Lift Long Life Torsion Springs ‘Insulated With Protective Back Cover ‘Insulated Thermopane Glass With Decorative Design ‘Heavy Duty Galvanized Hardware With Tapered Track System *Ready To Accept Automatic Garage Door Operator But to do so, Skeena Cablevi- sion has lo drop an American sig- nal, says Bamard. “Basically the CRTC rule is that we must carry one Canadian signal for each American one,’ said Barnard. “To meet that ratio we decided to drop PBS from Detroit, Chan- nel 18.
