Solicitor Leave your card with 5,600 readers: The Business Guide Terrace Review —- Wednesday, October 16, 1991 29 Forum — Giesbrecht said it was a piece of politically-motivated legislation designed to “pick a fight with teachers and trustees". Parker said the widely-publi- cized Social Credit projections of what NDP programs would cost — $15 billion more than revenue over five years — were calculated by Finance Minister John Janzten and other account- ants. Giesbrecht called the num- . _ bers "garbage", noting that the calculations were made by "the same people that for the past four years have cooked the province’s books with things like the BS (Budget Stabilization) fund". Another question regarding NDP fiscal policy highlighted the difference in attitude between Parker and Giesbrecht. When asked where the NDP would get money for its prom- ised programs, Giesbrecht cited savings from reduction of money wasted in government operations and an increase in corporate taxes. As an example of what he perceived as foregone revenue, Giesbrecht noted that Doman Industries, a prominent forest company, made a $63 million profit last year but paid nothing in taxes. "If a person making $12,000 year pays taxes, why not a profitable corporation?" Parker, however, said Doman has already put money into the provincial economy, employs numerous people, and is invest- ing in capital projects and pollu- tion control technology. — _Giesbrecht was also asked why during the time he was on Ter- race city council he voted against both the establishment of Terraceview Lodge and the Continued from page 5 city’s bid to host the B.C. Win- ter Games. He appeared taken aback by the questions, saying, "Somebody's wrong." He said he voted in favour of ihe land ac- quisition that secured the Ter- raceview site for the city, and although he voted against the winter games bid the first time it was proposed he supported the later and successful bid in 1986. Giesbrecht also responded in his closing remarks to a query about his reasons for opposing the Kemano Completion Project while he was on council. He said at that time the project was - considerably wider in scope than the one that was eventually approved. He voted against it, he said, because it required further research into environmental impact, including effects on the Skeena River. Hydroelectric megaprojects were on Juanita Hatton’s mind during her closing remarks. She said she is opposed to any fur- ther such developments, and suggested that the audience ask itself how people will be employed by Kemano Comple-— tion when the construction phase is finished. Parker closed by saying all the NDP’s spending priorities will require tax dollars that can be collected only if the economy is functional. He spoke in favour of what he termed "responsible development", citing as examples the proposed Orenda pulp and paper project and the proposed Kitimat port develop- ment. "You have to have vision, an eye on the horizon, plan ahead to have an economic engine." : AGAINST wore | CANADA'S rousoanion of! #1 KILLER. acknowledgement card.
